Topical: This is a topical anesthetic.  Some dentist feel that its helps to numb the surface of the tissue where they are going to give you the injection (shot).

Yes: Of course, the topical is there to help the little pinch as the needle enters the tissue.  If you dont like it let your dentist know.

Of course!: There is no medical necessity for the topical anesthetic gel. Many people don't like the flavor or the temporary numbness of the throat if they swallow any of it. You can simply have the injection. That is what really numbs the tooth and/or gum for long enough to have the procedure done.

Examination: Your mother needs to be examined, so start with a dentist. Without knowing any factors that could be contributing to this issue, that's her best course of action.

Epinephrine: Some of the anesthetics contain epinephrine, which can make your heart race and make you feel light headed. Discuss this with your dentist and ask for an anesthetic without epinephrine, like carbocaine.

Fear of dentist: It sounds like your fear is getting in the way of needed dental treatment. Investigate working with a dental clinic where you have the option to discuss the procedures you need, before going in for the procedure. Discuss with the dentist the fear you have. Going in for a face-to-face visit(s) may help you start to feel less anxious. Putting off dental care only makes your fear worse.

Many: There are many different types depending on the desired effect and duration.  We don't use Novocain anymore as it's formulation was an allergen to some patients

What started it?: Did you see a dentist who gave you an injection of anesthetic? In which case it typically wears off in a few hours.   Are you numb on the lower jaw after extraction of impacted wisdom teeth?  Then the numbness may be temporary or permanent.  Are you numb from a traumatic injury? Then you need to see a dentist or oral surgeon (specialist) immediately.    See a different dentist for an evaluation.

in a different country and waiting til i get home to see dentist in a week 1/2. how can i numb the pain before then?  will it get worse?

Accepted Answer

OTC: You can take some otc pain killers such as advil or Aleve (naproxen) or what you normally would take for a headache.  You can try some topical anesthetic such as orajel but that is unlike l to help much if at all.  Avoid hot, cold, sweet foods and eat on the other side.  I would strongly recommend you see a local dentist at least for a diagnosis. Then you could elect to be treated or wait until you get home.
