Not usually: Most of my patients do very well after carpal tunnel surgery and recover rapidly.  Therapy is rarely necessary.  However, some of my older patients seem to benefit from a few weeks of therapy, especially those who develop significant postoperative swelling or stiffness.

Several treatments: There are several treatment options other than surgery that can help. Only Splinting, steroids (both oral and injected) and anti inflammatories have demonstrated any consistent relief but it is often only temporary and not very effective beyond 2 months. This is usually effective for early and mild carpal tunnel syndrome.

Usually very quick: Typically, the operation involves a skin incision over the wrist and an incision through the fibrous layer of tissue that holds everything in the carpal tunnel in place, which essentially allows for more space and relieves the pressure. Then, the skin is closed, and the fibrous tissue usually heals on its own.

Splints: Generally the first therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome is wrist splints, particularly at night, and decrease the offending activity (repetitive motion).  If there is no improvement with those measures, then see you doctor for either surgery consult or additional physical therapy.

Depends: Most light activities are initiated 2 weeks post-op, with lifting around 6 weeks.  Progressed thereafter as tolerated.  Many patients experience discomfort across the base of the palm for up to 6 months, particularly with heavier pushing.  This is often referred to as "pillar pain".

Depends: Some surgeons apply a splint for several weeks while others just wrap with gauze for a few days. No evidence that one is better than the other.

Radial nerve decompr: The surgery occurs over the radial aspect of the forearm and involves decompression of the motor and sensory branches of the radial nerve. The nerve is most commonly compressed at the arcade of froshe the leading edge of the supinator. Or the leash of henry a vascular structure. Should eliminate your pain and numbness to the dorsum of the hand. Usually done under general anesthesia or regional.

Go see your surgeon: Your surgeon should have given you post-operative instructions plus enough pain medication to control expected amount/duration of pain. If that amount &amp; dose are not enough, then you need to contact surgeon about possible complication causing unbearable pain. Don't wait.

Accepted Answer

There will be: a sutured or otherwise closed surgical incision if that's what you mean by "split" but it should not be open.  As I am uncertain what your definition of split is exactly, if you believe the wound dehisced (opened) then contact the surgeon immediately.
