i recently started running and my big toe goes numb while i'm running...why?

Numb: There are a number of anatomical reasons for this.  The first right thing to do is see your podiatrist for an evaluation.

Make sure shoes: Fit properly, keep in mind the orthotic takes up room. Some times big toe problems are related to the back, so check for any low back pain.

the pain starts while i am running a race and it becomes difficult to step.

Podiatrist: Consult a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment. I assume your footwear and running technique is not the problem. Possibilities include tendinitis, stress fracture, fasciitis or arch problems requiring orthotics.

Synovitis heel cord: At age 27, i wouldn't think that this would be arthritis.  I would suspect a gait change that causes overuse with inflammation, synovitis in the toe and fasciitis in the heel.  The usual culprit is a tight calf.  Without an exam, i would recommend calf stretching, .

Soft tissue injury: you may have a soft tissue injury it could be a bursitis or a tendon or ligament injury. I would need more information. How long ago did this start. Do you remember any injuries? Does the toe swell for a few days and the swelling go down. What other medical problems do you have.Did you have this x--ray when you were having pain. Does it feel better when you remove the shoe. Does it happen after yo

Maybe: Ill fitting shoes will cramp toes and destabilize heel strike and stance producing stress and pain.

Clarification Needed: Are all these symptoms occurring immediately after or at the end of a vigorous run? If so this could be exercise induced 'compartment syndrome' . Try stretching before each run, decrease your speed and avoid sprinting.  This problem is typically related to overuse or biomechanically misused muscles.

Foot injury: Would recommend a visit with foot/ankle specialist to review type and details of injury, physical examination of your foot and ankle and xrays to look for possible fracture. Additional diagnostic studies may be needed.  Rest, ice, elevate and immobilize.

It figures.: It could be quite possible that you were wrong in your initial assessment of your foot. it is time for a professional opinion of the problem.

MRI of what??: The symptoms you describe could be from your lumbar spine!  If your spine MRI is normal the next step would be a visit to a Neurologist! Another xray would be useless!
