my medication was changed from levothyroxine 25mcg to np thyroid 30mg. can this medication change affect my menstrual cycle? if so, how long would it possibly take to get on track or be trackable? i havent found any information on this yet. thanks?

: Years ago we used dedicated thyroid made from pigs. 60 mgs and 90 mgs were popular doses to maintain normal thyroid status. In my experience, by 2 to 4 weeks an adequate response should be reached. The level of Levothyroxine may not be as precise in NP thyroid compared to modern thyroid medication though.

there have been questions lately about np thyroid by acella.  can you comment?

Not best product: NP thyroid is derived from the thyroid of pigs from slaughterhouses.  It contains a mixture of T4 and T3.  T3 is rapid acting, and may give you a "boost" after taking it.   If you're older, this boost can accelerate your heart rate and potentially cause problems. Many people on these T4/T3 products are being overtreated.  Best to stick with synthetic levothyroxine, adjusted to the correct dose.

i was switched to np thyroid from levothyroxine 2 weeks ago. my period is now 5 days late and having a lot of clear discharge. could it be that my body is adjusting to np thus messing up my cycle? i had sex may 13 and my last period was may 16?

: Yes, change in thyroid hormone level is likely the culprit. If your menses on May 16 happened normally (3-5 days with typical blood loss) then conception with sexual activity on May 13 is almost impossible. However, in order to erase any concern just do a urine pregnancy test if period does not come by next 3 days. Take care.

what does it mean when your hyper thyroidism symptoms start to go away while on medication?

Hyperthyroid: Hopefully, it means that the medication is controlling the overactive thyroid.  Follow closely with your physician for blood tests to make sure that it doesn't go too far the other direction and you end up with an underactive thyroid.

should a person with hyper thyroidism take typical thyroid  medication  like synthroid (thyroxine)?

Usually not: Usually, a person with hyperthyroidism has too much thyroid hormone in her body. One would take Synthroid (thyroxine) (synthetic hormone) to make up for a lack of enough thyroid hormone due to HYPOthyroidism. A person with HYPOthyroidism who becomes hyperthyroid due to taking too high of a dose of Synthroid (thyroxine) might be asked to take Synthroid (thyroxine) (at a lower dose) even though she is temporarily hyperthyroid.

done an sgpt test and it says on the result that mine is 66 (ref: 9.00-52 u/l(h). do i need to worry? i am drinking ptu (propylthiouracil) for my thyroidism continuously

PTU (propylthiouracil) and liver : Drugs like ptu (propylthiouracil) and Methimazole can cause liver toxicity but hyperthyroidism can also cause elevation int the liver enzyme test you had done. If your still early in your treatment and your thyroid hormone levels (free t4) is still high it could be that. Hope this helps.

Thyroid med: Hypothyroidism can be treated with thyroid hormone replacement.  If the diagnosis was made correctly, you most likely will need to take the pill lifelong.

Accepted Answer

Yes: collagen supplement is not a contraindicated with hypothyroidism. The question why are you taking collagen supplement . collagen is provided amply in the diet if you eat animal protein.

Yes: thyroid dysfunction can affect you menstrual cycle. If you havent been checked, it is an easy blood test.
