i've had an onion smell in my left nostril for awhile now, even small bits of snot carries the smell on a tissue. i had a scab in the upper part of my nose for awhile but it's healed now and i still smell it. what is going on?

Dry mucus membrane: It may be the that drying of the mucus membrane is causing this symptom.  Use an emollient to soften the mucus membrane. Use any emollient like , Vaseline, in the opening of the nose. Use is sparingly to avoid inhaling the emollient. In the morning rinse the of use nose with a warm saline solution.  You can make it  by adding a teaspoon of iodine free salt to a glass of water.

Infection/dryness: This may be due to an infection in the nasal vestibule, where hair is located, or may also be due to dryness. Best to see your otolaryngologist fof exact diagnosis.

Nose: It is difficult to say what is going on with your nose.  I would suggest you go have it examined.  It could be an infection, an ulcer, or just a dry spot.  The treatments are very different.

Granuloma /scar: A slow healing lesion that keeps forming a scab may be a granuloma- a chronic smoldering lesion that takes a long time to heal. The reason? Playing with it. Apply some Bacitracin and refrain from touching the scab and it will go away.

Abcess: this could be an infection with nasal abscess formation. You need to be examined and will need oral antibiotics. Until seen OK to use a pea sized drop of Neosporib Ointment on a Q--tip and don't pick at the scabs,

Humidify air: apply vaseline, and minimize irritation.  You might want to see and ENT if problem persists.

Dryness: In the winter, when the air is being heated it looses humidity and it is common for people to experience crusting and drying of their nose and even have nose bleeds. Try one of the saline ( not vasoconstrictor- it will make it worse) nasal sprays  and get a humidifier for your room. If it persists see an ENT and he can evaluate and prescribe medications to help!

every 24-48 hours the same scab forms inside my right nostril. i have to remove it or it cuts off my breathing. why does it keep forming?

The scab is forming over a chronically infected area, (in this case probably a staph infection), and if the scab is large enough to obstruct your breathing on that side I would most certainly have an ENT doc look at this as soon as is possible.thanks

Bacteria/skin oil: Probably a mixture of skin oil and bacteria - try cleansing/washing your face thoroughly at least twice daily.

Dryness?: Could be you have dry nasal passages. Try nasal saline spray, Ayr gel, vasoline applied on a qtip, or Ponaris drops. If one or all of these over the counter things don't work..see your ENT
