Staph in nose: Not an uncommon finding. Why was the culture done. If no obvious infection, antibiotics not likely needed.

nasal endoscopy culture positive for staph aureus with no white cells. ent saw pus in sinuses. could i have a bacterial infection without white cells?

Mgt: The pus in the airway is consistent with an infection. I would suggest discussing antibiotic treatment with your physician.

dr prescription famciclovir & mupirocin. culture shows negative 4 staph. i've been putting this in my nose per doc but it specifically says not to. is it ok to?

Nose: Commonly used for bacterial nose infections. If not getting better in a week, please return to your doctor.

had deep nasal culture done and large amounts of coagulase negative staph found.  could this be causing my nasal turbinates to swell and be irritated?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: This is usually a normal bacteria in the nose and on the skin and probably not the cause of your nasal congestion etc. An allergy problem is more likely.

Definitely not: A culture like that is essentially useless. Staph CN organisms in this setting are 'just along for the ride' and have nothing to do with your sinus disease. That might have been different if a true pathogen was found (like Strep) but I'm pretty sure this is just what we call 'normal flora'. The sinuses are not a sterile place, so there are ordinary bacteria there. I would seek more about ALLERGY.

hello there, i have constant thick sticky mucous rusty tinged behind my uvula and in my throat. i've cultured them and it's serratia and staph, been on cipro without help. i also take claritin and do saline nasal spray daily. i have low igg. thank you?

Low IgG: With the picture depicted, you need to be evaluated by allergy / immubology service at a tertiary care hospital, (a university hospital or a teaching hospital), you most probably have an immunodeficiency problem for whatever reason, you might need admission and IV antibiotics to clear the infection and manage the condition from there, goodluck

No: Many people who have MRSA or mssa infections are colonized with this bacteria in the nares and in areas of the skin especially in the axillae, groins and perianal areas. Colonization can be transient or prolonged.  In many cases colonization can be eradicated by topical treatment ie. Mupirocin ointment and hibiclens soap sometimes combined with oral antibiotics such as Minocycline or septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim).

Absolutely: and you can also just be a carrier of staph in your nose, get culture and if positive a topical called mupirocin should be put up your nostrils

Some basics: Research has shown adults touch their nose/face an average of 6X/hr during their waking hours. This subconscious activity loads the fingers with any local germs that are then available to transfer to other body sites or any object in the environment. If the staph strain is benign, it would cause no harm. If the strain is invasive it can trigger infection.

Yes: Many of us have staph living in our noses.  It is often completely harmless.  It only needs to be treated if we are having recurrent skin infections, or those we live with/are in close contact with are.  We have lots of bacteria in and on us; in fact there are more bacterial cells than human cells.  Amazing but true.
