Most x-ray contrast : In order to show up on x-ray or ct, contrast needs to have a high atomic number and be physiologically available but not permanent! iodinated compounds satisfy these requirements, whether for intravascular or other uses.  Substances like barium sulfate are ok for the gut, but not for injection into veins.  In addition, kidneys clear iodinated substances from the body, showing the renal  system.

No: Contrast for MRI out of system within 24 hours, excreted by kidneys, should not have any effects on any future medications.

None: Iodinated contrast which is given IV can damage the kidney mostly the injury is temporary.The test should be done only if there is no other way to diagnose the disease or to treat a condition.Hydration oral or intravenous helps in limiting the injury. Acetyl cysteine is used but the evidence is weak that it actually works, it does not  prevent the contrast from being filtered through the kidney.

my high cholestrol level runs down in the family. i am not obese and i work out . but in contrast my ldl is 270! what medications should i take?

Crestor or Lipitor (atorvastatin): Lipitor (atorvastatin) or Crestor are both top choices.  Consider Lipitor (atorvastatin) since it has a generic and is much cheaper.  If neither of those work you may have to add on  a bile acid sequestrant like Questran which also has generic.

i have a diffusely enlarged thyroid/nontoxic goiter with thyroiditis, i am not on medication for this as it is wait and watch currently. i need to know what my odds are of developing thyroid dysfunction after iodine contrast?

: Rare but need to know family history among other things.

for diagnosis of pe in patients with severe allergy to iodine contrast.  is pre medication with high dose prednisone safe? patient also has history of v tach and sudden death in family from v tach. on beta blocker. risks ?

: Please review the premedication protocol of the hospital and obtain an Allergy consult. A CXR , EKG 12 lead, and a Cardiology consult are also indicated.

The : The administration of contrast sometimes produces nausea and vomiting.  It is prudent to have an empty stomach, however a pill swallowed with a mouthful of water is reasonably safe.  There is no known interaction between intravenous contrast and xanax (alprazolam).  You should be fine to pre-medicate, however a ct exam is very easy and much less anxiety/claustrophobia invoking than an mri.

i've had gerd my entire life just these past three months it's gotten chronic. sore and pain in the throat for three months. medication with no effect my ent doctor ordered an mri neck with contrast will i get any answers from this ?

why shouldn't you take metformin based drugs after iv contrast?

It doesn't damage : The kidney, but rarely dye of the IV cob trast damages the kidney, and since metformin is destroyed by the kidney, it will build up in blood stream to toxic levels with resulting high risk of life-threatening side effect

so one stops meftformin before the conrast, check kidnet function 2 days later- if normal can restart metformin.
