Muscle coordination: The esophagus is just a long muscle.  There has to be coordination to push food from your mouth to your stomach and sometimes the coordination of this muscle does not work effectively leading to a motility disorder.  Just like your skeletal muscles sometimes cramp and get tired and dont work well this same process can happen to the esophagus muscle.

Team effort: This is a complicated issue that grows in complexity over time. In growing children and young adults when the scoliosis begins to compromise pulmonary function, surgery becomes a consideration. Well before  then the patient should be evaluated by an experienced scoliosis spine sugeon and experienced n-m pediatric neurologist. Bracing, physical therapy and pulmonary functions need to be followed.

Not usually: However, rarely a patient may suffer ms, and also, a peripheral nerve disorder called chronic demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.  But no true association between this central nervous disorder and nerve/ muscle disease.

why are long-term trached and vented patients with a neuromuscular disease who are otherwise healthy more prone to acquiring pneumonia?  thank you:)

Several reasons: First, trached & vented patients are inherently more at risk for pneumonia simply because there is a foreign piece of plastic in their airway. Second, patients with neuromuscular disease have poor airway clearance of mucus and are more susceptible to developing infections such as pneumonia. Also, these patients are at increased risk for aspiration that can cause a chemical pneumonitis.

i have chronic muscle cramping/ache/fatigue all over body brought on by activity that has gotten worse over past 5 years. i have no muscle atrophy/weakness. blood/electrolyte/ genetic tests are all normal. can this be a muscle/neuromuscular disease?

: If muscle biopsy and EMG are also normal, chronic fatigue syndrome, also as known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, should be in the differential diagnosis.
