Pain: Neuropathic pain is most often constant or almost constant, burning or throbbing and often associated with numbness/tingling. Neuralgic pain is sharp, short lasting and intermittent.

Accepted Answer

VARIES: Really depends on cause, and if a main branch or division.  If myelin coverings affected, reversal could occur in 4-5 weeks, but if internal axon injured, might take months if ever.  This can be tested by electrodiagnostic studies, which may confirm prognosis.

Neuropathy: That is a difficult question to answer online. A good neurologist might be able to determine the true cause for your pains. Sometimes inherent nerve problems point to a generalized neurologic disorder. Sympathetic chain surgery might also be beneficial. Maybe a second opinion?  Best of luck!

Signs: Neuralgia is pain is the distribution of a nerve. Neuropathy is objective evidence of nerve dysfunction. For example, numbness or weakness atteibuted to a nerve. One can have a neuralgia without objective evidence of nerve dysfunction. One can have neuropathy without pain.

Paresthesias: Neuralgia is pain and while neuropathy can include painful sensations it also encompasses numbness, tingling, shock-like pain, temperature sensations, etc.

NO: Neuropathy is a general term that refers to a problem with nerve function. Neuritis refers to a nerve inflammation or irritation which can cause sensations such as burning, tingling or numbness.

if you have infraorbital neuropathy does that mean you have trigeminal neuralgia, since the infraorbital nerve comes from the trigmeinal nerve?

Depends: Trigeminal neuralgia IS a neuropathy but a very specific type. If you have shocklike lancinating sudden intermittent pain, then you may have trigeminal neuralgia of that division of the trigeminal nerve.

9 serotonin blocker drugs are used to block peripheral neuropathy pains. question: might they also work for pudendal neuralgia ?

Accepted Answer

: Drugs used to modify "nerve pain" would likely have equivalent effects on pudendal neuralgia.  But pelvic floor physical therapy would likely add additional stabilization resulting in less need for pain control.

why would a vascular study be recommend to me, by surgeon, for chronic idiopathic peripheral neuralgia/neuropathy and pudendal neuralgia.

Evaluate vasculature: while a vascular study is not complete enough to fully determine the cause of nerve damage it can rule out a vascular abnormalities. Ultimately a nerve study such as an EMG will be necessary.  In addition an MR I of the spine and pelvis might be considered.

can nerve block in your neck trigger other pain syndromes to show up like trig neuralgia, cns inflam, &peripheral neuropathy?

Highly unlikely: Meds injected in a nerve block tend to stay right there and not create problems all over the body.
