Not very likely: It is possible, but not likely, that this symptom represents nerve damage.  It would depend on where the symptoms are specifically, what your exam looks like, and if there are any skin findings that could explain the itching.  Numbness and weakness are more consistent with nerve damage.

i have an itch but can't find it? iv had 3 lower back operations and severe nerve damage  down leg, could this be the reason ?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely .: There is no cure for this if your symptoms have been present for a year or more , but lyrica, (pregabalin) neurontin, or even an epidural steroid injection may help.

i've had v low iron & hb (as low as 19 (1.9) for years- cause is mental illness. my ?= can this cause nerve damage to hands/feet? they burn, itch badly briefly & coldness eases it. heat, exercise & gravity seem to bring it on/worsen it?

: Odd statement. The blood forming system in your body does so no matter how your brain functions. If mental illness triggered poor dietary choices that starved the system of needed nutrients it may be a factor in anemia. The same lack of nutrients can lead to nerve damage. You need to discuss this all with your regular physician. Both issues can likely be fixed.

my husband had diabetic neuropathy and for the past 2 mos. has suffered with severe itching. what can i do for this?

Topical treatment: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Lidocaine ointment.

if this skin burning and itching/prickling ive been getting & was told was potential neuropathy has been solved by nizatadine what could the cause be? nizatadine is giving me unpleasant side effects and i dont want gabapentin if its not neuropathy?

: There is some evidence that drugs like nizatidine can help with neuropathy, as you have found.  There are other drugs like it that may do so as well and that you may tolerate better. Ask your doctor which one to try instead.

Peripheral neuropath: Because of the eye symptoms, i would be concerned about something happening at the brain level.  Neuropathy doesn't usually cause a black visual field. See your physician or a neurologist to sort this out.

See a dermatologist: It is difficult to make a proper diagnosis since I am not there to see the condition. I recommend seeing a dermatologist so that they can make a proper diagnosis and give you something to get rid of the condition or relieve symptoms.

Possibly.: Depends upon how long ago this occurred, but nerve regrowth is often heralded by odd neurologic sensations.

#18 root canal 3 months ago and is very sensitive only to any movement. have lots of inflammation in jaw. endo thinks it looks fine. wants to try gabapentin for over reactive nerve? i never heard of this for after a root canal. itches and sore. thx?

: 'Looks fine' should not give pain. There has to be an explanation for using powerful pain med. pl. enquire. Hope you feel better

Yes and no: A severed or ruptured nerve theoretically can be repaired surgically, but that does not guarantee complete healing and normal function.  Nerves do have the ability to regenerate.  New connection can be made to bridge the area of injury.  This takes time and most healing will occur within the first year after injury.  Ultimately, your body will do the best it can to heal the injury.
