Nerve damage : It depends on the underlying pathology. If there is nerve damage from a compressive pathology like carpal tunnel, the pathology will typically progress and worsen. If it is after acute injury like a fracture, it will typically heal very slowly. An EMG may be able to sell the severity if the nerve damage and your doc should be able to answer your question fully. This may be good: The pain in the list can suggest a neurological issue or possibly a vascular issue. The fact that it's gotten better is a good sign. I can't tell for sure if the piping is from tendons, the position of the bones in the wrist, but that would be when I might consider.

Thumb numbness: Not sure exactly how you hurt your wrist but you may have injured a part of your median nerve if thumb is numb on the palm side or part of the radial nerve if numb on the top side. Recovery depends on the extent of the injury...Weeks to months.

Probably ligament: probably tore a ligament at your wrist.  Rest, but keep it in motion, I like warm compresses.

You should: See a hand specialist immediately. Either in his office or the er. You may have nerve or vascular compromise that would need to be corrected right away to prevent long term damage.

Possible: The ulnar nerve does travel from the inner aspect of the elbow to the palm of the hand on the side of the little finger.  A fall on the out stretched hand could  injury the nerve. If symptoms persists see your doctor.

Depends on severity: Any nerve in the hand can be damaged, but i presume you refer to the median nerve, which is often pinched in the wrist (carpal tunnel). If decompressed in time, full recovery is possible. If the nerve has been severely entrapped, with loss 90% or more of nerve function, then the loss can be irreversible. Persistent pain, numbness/tingling, & weakness in the pattern of the involved nerve results.
