is it ok to use neem in toothpaste?

Accepted Answer

No: First of all use only a pea sized portion of toothpaste that has the ADA seal on the package which says the product actually does what it says on the packaging.  Adding tree oil may interfere with some of the toothpaste's properties.  Concern that prolonged use, beyond 6 weeks, may cause kidney damage.  No good scientific articles affirming effectiveness.  I would not encourage its use.

No: Baking soda will cause wearing down your enamel and after a while, your tooth will look translucent and greyish, not white.  The thicker the enamel, the whiter the teeth.

Many options: Any fluoridated non-abrasive toothpaste would be a good choice. If you have a very low decay rate and therefore won't really benefit from the fluoride, baking soda and a little salt has done well by many people for decades as well. Even dry brushing is helpful so the main thing is to brush and clean inter-dentally (floss or another aid).

Sensodyne: It's one of many good toothpastes and may help in reducing tooth sensitivity for certain specific indications only. See your dentist if your teeth are sensitive to determine cause and what would be best to eliminate or reduce the sensitivity. Most causes of tooth sensitivity require specific treatments so find out what, if anything, is causing yours.

Don't know: I do know that US products from Crest, Colgate, Arm &amp; Hammer, Tom's, are made under rigorous US regulations.  Elgydium is made in France, not subject to US regs.  And as it has to be shipped here from overseas, those costs get added to the cost of the product.

Any with fluoride: The american academy of pediatric dentistry recommends using a Fluoride toothpaste as soon as teeth are present. Use a smear in children less than 2 years old and a pea-sized amount in children 2-5 years old. Have them spit out the excess after brushing when they are old enough. The children's ones with Fluoride tend to have better flavors than the ones for adults.

Helps Clean+Fluoride: It is like a polishing compound with Fluoride in it.  The toothbrush does the most work and is by far the most important but the toothpaste with Fluoride helps to remineralize damaged enamel to help prevent cavities.  I don't endorse any toothpaste, just make sure it has Fluoride and use it often.  Be cautious of those claiming to "proven better than" another brand.  Wording is everything.

Not recommended: Most toothpastes contain Fluoride which is very beneficial for your teeth, but ingesting too much is not good for you.  Don't use toothpaste as a breath freshener between brushings and when you brush use a small pea sized amount and spit out the excess.

Flouride toothpaste: There are many good flouride toothpastes. We look for a non-abrasive and fluoridated toothpaste when recommending one.  Carifree makes a great toothpaste, but it is special order or only available at your dentist office.  If you are at the store.  Look for colgate regular.  It is non abrasive and flouridated.  As a general rule i avoid the tartar control and whitening brands.
