IUD insertion: Sometimes patients are given a NSAID such as Motrin or Naproxyn prior to insertion to minimize discomfort.  It usually is not a very painful procedure according to my patients.

how safe is the use of misoprostol (cytotec) in softening the cervix prior to the induction of labor?

Accepted Answer

The drug has been: Used extensively throughout the country for years.  It is good.  25-50 mcg vaginally or orally every 4 hours is the recommended dose but needs to be done in a hospital.  May take more than one dose or may take off with just one, can be difficult to predict.  There are risks with anything but following dose recommendations is key.  I always give oral dose after delivery to decrease bleeding. Gdluc.

Ripens the cervix...: Prostaglandins are natural body substances that are involved in the softening and dilation of the cervix in preparation for birth.  Prepidil is Prostaglandin E2.  It can be used help make the cervix ready for labor as part of the induction of labor.   It is placed in the vagina in the hospital while the baby is monitored.  It can cause contractions or less commonly, labor.   Its very effective.

im 35 weeks preg.. i had mild cramping and got admitted to the hostipal last night , the doctor said my cervix is softening , how long until labour?

In  hours to weeks: Science has not yet discovered a reliable method for predicting the onset of labor in women. The mild cramping you had experienced may be transient and the softening of your cervix may occur hours to weeks before labor begins. Wish to remain pregnant until at least 38 weeks for your baby's sake despite your discomfort. Premature delivery before 37 wks  is not good; can be a terrible complication.

Watching the clock: Walking, and taking advantage of these hours you have to prepare and reflect are useful.  Avoid suggested herbal or complimentary regimens, and stick with your physician's advice only. You will checked twice a week, and a decision will be made regarding inducing labor in a controlled environment if your OB feels that it is appropriate and the best safest route vs watchful waiting.

You can walk: What is going on now is cervical ripening. Walking or having intercourse (if it's comfortable for you) are two possible ways to encourage more cervical ripening or labor. However generally the cervix dilates in its own time.

Yes: Unless it is extremely large, it should be no problem.

Yes: During the menstrual flow with or without cramping the cervical opening is slightly dilated at that time except in patients with cervical stenosis(blockage) and blood then "backs up" into the uterus with severe cramping.To allow blood extrusion.

i had cancer of the cervix, and the radiation treatment threw me into early menopause. is there a natural alternative to hormones?

Lots of Tofu: You are only a little early with menopause, which might be coincidental with your radiation.
