Works: It's the treatment of choice for graves. It's usually successful. It can't be given during pregnancy but there's no problem with a later pregnancy after treatment is complete. Be aware that you will almost certainly need to take a thyroid supplement for the rest of your life afterwards.

Safe: Treatment with radioactive iodine is common after thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer.  It decreases the chance of recurrent disease significantly.  It is generally well tolerated.  The most common side effect is a dry mouth due to less saliva production.  Radiation exposure to your body is relatively low.  The chance of radiation side effects is related to the dose.

Consider another T4: Not sure if headaches are directly related to thyroidectomy. My experience is that rarely some patients do have headaches with synthroid (thyroxine). Changing that to tirosint or other thyroid hormone preparations can help. If not, see a neurologist.

Hypothyroidism: Lifelong need for thyroid hormone replacement. Watch calcium and parathyroid function as well. Endocrinologist needs to monitor for recurrence of cancer (i presume that's why you had these procedures)

Need more info: In general thyroid cancers has excellent prognosis except in few  rare types. After surgery you have RAI most likely you have papillary Ca, spread to lymph nodes , this type has very good prognosis especially at age 38 , Now you have to tell ?

NO. call the surgeon: Pain at an incision site is never good.  Get it checked out soon.

Size and features: It depends upon the size and pathologic features of the tumor. Small noninvasive papillary cancers may not benefit from use of radioiodine. Check w/your endocrinologist.

i had a a total thyroidectomy to remove a 3 cm malignant nodule. do i need rai treatment?  if i do, how do i protect my family? i have a 13 years old.

You need RAI: Yes, you need follow up by an endocrinologist who will likely give you rai.  This is proven to prevent recurrence of the thyroid cancer.  You will be given instructions on how to be with your family, but the restrictions are not severe.  The iodine is in your sweat and urine. It is like having the flu, and you ask your family not to get too close to you for a few days.

Anytime: Hi. There is no relationship between when you take Provera and have a thyroidectomy. Since the generally accepted indication for total thyroidectomy is thyroid cancer or a strong suspicion of it, keep track of your priorities. The anesthesiologist and the surgeon will go over what meds you're taking, but they will NOT be concerned about medroxyprogesterone. Good luck!

i'm on levothyroxine 125 mcg after thyroidectomy and rai 131 treatment. one. 1 month checkup diagnosed with type1 diabetes with a 6.9 a1c. related?

Diabetes and thyroid: It is not uncommon to have both thyroid disease and diabetes, as well as hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol).  Type I diabetes means that you do not make any insulin and need to be on insulin replacement for life.  I recommend seeing an endocrinologist to follow these chronic conditions and to be sure that you are on the appropriate medication, diet, and exercise plan.
