Anti-inflammatory: Steroid eyedrops are a mainstay of eye therapy.  Without them corneal transplants would be difficult.  They treat a variety of inflammations of the eye surface like allergies, certain types of trauma, various degenerative diseases and internal inflammations such as uveitis.  They come in various strengths and some are mixed with antibiotics.  There usefulness is beyond question.

More info?: Unfortunately, pain around the eye is associated with too many disorders.  It is difficult to offer a meaningful response.  A diagnosis from your eye md would be helpful.  You are on antibiotics for infection and steroids for inflammation.  I would suggest you return to your eye md and express concern regarding the continued pain.

Yes: The antibiotic especially neosporin in the eye drop may cause contact allergic reactions, the steroid can increase the risk for eye infections (especially HSV1 )which can potentially lead to loss in eyesight) as well as glaucoma in genetically predisposed people. If used for just a few days, it will likely be ok but one can never be sure.

: After using corticosteroid eye drops for 2 months,  I would think weaning off them rather than stopping suddenly would prevent rebound of certain symptoms that may have been the reason that they were prescribed.  However, steroid drops prescribed following cataract surgery are usually stopped abruptly without incident. Effects wear off in a few days.

No: There is no medicine that will remove a pterygium.  Surgery is required for this.

No: No, but with most conditions it is recommended and you do taper, otherwise you may get recurrence of the condition you were treating.  I most cases, the patient feels well from the condition and they stop steroid drops before the condition is completely resolved and the condition slowly worsens again like it came back, but in reality it was never completely gone.
