: Yes, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen or ibuprofen can cause a false positive test for THC or barbiturates. Oxaprozin, another NSAID, can cause a false positive test for benzodiazepines.

i took drug test today and it was positive for tca, i regularly take an otc sleep aid with diphenhydramine. couldn't have caused the false positive?

"tca"????: did you mean THC (marijuana or cannabis)?  TCA medically usually means tricyclic antidepressant, and these are actually chemically similar to benadryl (diphenhydramine).  If all that was done was a SCREENING test, there are lots of potential false positives, and if used for legal purposes, all screening tests should be confirmed with a more sophisticated test, usually gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.

he suffers from spondylitis ... took some skelaxin (metaxalone) and has to take a drug test for probation... will this show a false positive for anything?

Drug Test: He will have no problem if he took a medication he has a prescription for, he just needs to show the prescription to the drug test center.  If he does not he may have problem.  I do not know specifically what it will show as but it will not be a false positive.  Best thing to do is tell them before the test he took this medication.  Always remember to only take prescription drugs given to you!

Mostly for THC: but ONLY on the screening test, and NOT on confirmatory tests.  If whoever is doing the testing only uses screening tests, and does not confirm the positive test with more sophisticated methods, they are not following generally recognized principles of drug testing and could be subject to lawsuits. The confirmatory tests can determine that the positive is NOT a substance of abuse.
