Could be fungal: If the nails are discolored, thickened and deformed, there is a higher chance of the nail becoming infected by a fungus infection because the nail plate (the part we trim) is lifted from the underlying nail bed.   Have it checked by your pcp or seek help from a podiatrist who can recommend treatment options ranging from topical meds, oral meds, laser therapy or surgery.

: Yellow discoloration usually indicates a bacterial infection or fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. It has recently been shown that along with fungus bacteria also infects the nail itself. The important thing is to wear clean shoes and clean socks and control the moisture of your skin with the spray on deodorant or something stronger possibly a prescription if really bad. Yellow nails: 
Smoker? that is a frequent cause of yellow nails as is coffee. Vit B12  or zinc deficiency can also stain nails yellow. Pathologically fungus is the most common culprit or familial yellow nail syndrome. f/u/ w/ dermatology  .

See below: A combination of Vicks vapo rub with a couple of drops of liquid chlorine bleach mixed in (three drops in a teaspoon of vaporub) can help treat toenail fungus. 
Get some latex exam gloves and cut off the fingers. Apply the mix to the toe and cover the toe with the latex 'finger'. It will give a  certain hydraulic pressure to the mix to force it under the nail.

Subungual hematoma: This is a term which means blood accumulation under the nail. Usually from a minor trauma, but frequently seen in runners, it sometimes will bleed initially and the nail is raised off the nail bed. You can cut the nail short up to where it's still attached, or it may detach itself over time. It will grow back, sometimes thicker and discolored

Sounds like fungus: Keep in mind... The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured.  It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future.  See a podiatrist for a treatment that is best for you.
