Leave it alone...: the rod can stay in forever.  Sometimes the screws that are placed though the rod at the top and bottom of your tibia can be painful and their removal is minor surgery.  Removing the rod is a big surgery sometimes and can be as painful as putting it in.

Couple days : Different people will heal at different rates . Keep your finger clean and covered if you are dealing with something dirty . Wash your hands regularly . Use gloves. When doing dishes and it will be better in 2-3 days .

It could be an umbilical hernia(it will pop up and get bigger when he lifts his head from a lying position...As you do when sitting up). I would worry more if it is getting bigger in size or has any pain associated with it.

Exercise with injury: Many people aren't able to do weight-bearing exercise.  But that doesn't mean you can't do any exercise at all!  you can always do non-weight bearing exercise like swimming or riding a stationary/reclined bike.  If your injury prevents you from even this type of activity, think about what you can do until you heal: stretching, yoga, deep breathing, walking on crutches.

If one is constipated for several days, stool can back up all the way to the right side, and cause discomfort or pain. Gallstones and kidney stones can also cause pain. One's primary care doctor or an Emergency Room doctor can check.
