sprained my thumb about 6 weeks ago. it was hyperextended  backwards .  i am still having a hard time using it. can't grip very hard or make a tight fist. maybe a 4 on pain scale.  have it checked?

what would cause pain on the outside of my hand? it starts at the base of my thumb and continues down to just before my wrist. it makes it hard to grip things. kind of sharp ache. fisting causes pain also.

Thumb Arthritis: Thumb arthritis is common with aging and occurs when cartilage wears away from the ends of the bones that form the joint at the base of your thumb — also known as the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. It can cause severe pain, swelling, and decreased strength and range of motion, making it difficult to do simple tasks, such as turning doorknobs and opening jars. Treatment involves meds/splints/surgery.

what can cause cmc internalbbrace suspensionplasty failure? done 9 mths ago, pain past 3 mths. dr said may need revision. xrays show arthritis, but i think it's in the middle thumb joint. hand near thumb swollen, thumb bends in only 50%. hard to grip?

Arthritis: Depending on where the swelling is and absent any trauma or infection, it sounds as though you may have developed some arthritis in the joint of the thumb.  If it is near the wrist junction or the joint just above that area, it is most likely arthritis.  You can see your pcp or an orthopedist of orhtopedist specializing in hands.  You can be helped.  If you think you have infection, get seen now!

See your doctor: Problems like these can only be correctly handled by your doctor in person.  He/she needs to listen to you, perform an examination and possibly run labs or other tests. That's the only way he/she can find out what's going on and what to do about it.

See your GP: Lumps and bumps are hard to sort out without an exam.  Please see your GP. If could be arthritic changes, or an infection, or it could be a tissue formed around a splinter that was never removed, or it could be something else!   See your GP and get it evaulated.  If it hurts a lot, is hot to the touch, you have fever or red streaks, go to an Emergency Department or see your doc right away,

Get a doctor check t: Any skin growth/lesion that persists beyond a couple of weeks needs to be shown to your doctor. I would advise you not to disturb it or try popping it...That will only make it worse. You may need to see a skin specialist to check you or show it to you family docotr.

Is bump new? : If the clear hard bump is new you may want to see your primary doctor to check it.  If it's due to trauma, it may be temporary.  Is it painful? If yes, it may be an infection.  It's best to see a doctor to look at that thumb.  Do not try to drain the bump with a needle as this may lead to infection of the finger.

i just cut my thumb while opening a can. the cut is only about 1/2cm long, but it is fairly deep. it doesn't hurt very much. what should i do?

Pressure and tetanus: That's a small cut.  Keep pressure on it and wash with soap and water.  If you haven't had a tetanus shot in 10 years you should get one.
