i have an unbalanced period which normally skips 2 months. it skipped january & february and started yesterday. it has a different scent than what i've had before. can you help me?

The output: of hormones during the menstrual cycle is not exactly the same from cycle to cycle in many , in fact most women. This also varies with age. It is this hormonal effect on the lining of the uterus (womb) that determines the "thickness" of the lining and it is the "shedding" of this lining which determines menstrual flow. Hope this helps!

how can i know the length of my period cycle if every month it's different?

You can't, but...: Only if the cycles are regular (about the same length) can one truly know her cycle length. If they are not regular, the best she can do is average the lengths of the last few cycles, and end up with a good guess.

Yes: Yes it is possibe to still get pregnant, but irregular cycles can make it more difficult.  You should speak with your ob/gyn or a reproducitve endocrinologist about further testing to determine the reason why they are irregular and if there are any other factors that may be affecting your ability to conceive (the fallopian tubes and semen).

Back to High School: The first day of a cycle is the first day of your new period. If you are regular (say every 28 days) then the new cycle will start on that next cycle day.  It would be highly unusual for the day of the month on a calendar to always be the first day of your period given different months have different lengths of days in it.

Which one?: Your ovulation day on the previous cycle  happened most likely 14 days before the 1st day of your period (*but see below) your next ovulation should occur, similarly 14 days before the first day of your next period. Then, it depends on whether this cycle will (or not) be shorter. *also, anovulatory cycles may occur. Check with your gyn to see what was the case. Best wishes.

Normal: Normal cycle length measured from the start of one period to the start of the next is anywhere from 21 days to 35 or 42 days depending on your source and there is normally a little variation due to the fact that some eggs mature faster than others. This means that periods do not normally start on the same day each month since months vary from 28-31 days. Hope this answers your question.

Irregular periods: reflect ovulation irregularity, as long as you are not pregnant.
Evaluation and treatment can help you ovulate if you wish to be pregnant. I f you are not interested in pregnancy, birth control pills can regulate and help prevent unhealthy uterine lining development. Likely from insulin resistance/polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Likely nothing: If you usually have a 5 day period and from what you are saying you are still having a 5 day problem then i suspect nothing is wrong. Having a lighter period than usual is nice positive change for you that you can be happy about. Now you are not having to deal with 5 heavy days.

it will start on the 18th of every month for several months, then changes to the 2nd of every month. why?

Day light savings?: Maybe your menstrual cycle is on daylight savings time and changes based on the suns rotation? This can be a normal occurrence and is not always a cause for concern. Sometimes birth control is used to regulate your menstrual cycle. If it becomes an issue have it checked out by your family physician.
