Pain medication: If the 5th toe is not deformed you may have sustained a non displaced fracture.Keep weight of the toe. May see your doctor.

Sprain/fracture/infe: This could be several pathologies. One a toe sprain from hyperflexion or extension(turf toe). Another could be a fracture. As long as the toe is not displaced a buddy splint will be fine. Lastly a soft tissue infection with a possible athletes foot skin disease. Hope this helps answer your question.

Nice warm Epson salt soaking of feet could help and  aloe or vit E lotion applied after, can be soothing. If  fever or other concerning symptoms appear, see the PCP.

Toe pain: Toe pain can be the result of overuse with tendinitis, stress fracture, bunions or metabolic issues. It could also be an infection.  Please further inquire with the physician where you had xrays completed on what to do next.

ASAP: One sided swelling of any extremity, without a history of trauma, can be indicative of an underlying problem. (infection, vascular problem, lymphatic blockage, Thrombosis) You should see a Dr. A thorough history and exam can provide insight as to what the underlying cause could be and treatment.

Varies : I would not hesitate to be seen, multiple potential considerations.  Among the top three are probably an infectious problem, an inflammatory condition such as gout, or a pressure phenomena.  A good exam can likely distinguish between multiple causes.
