my left ear has been an issue since july. pain, pressure, hearing loss, some brown drainage that smells bad. was told my eardrum is bulging. help!?!?

Yes: But you need your ENT to do it. A myringotomy is a relatively safe procedure that your physician can do in the office to remove middle ear fluid and ventilate the middle ear.

Not easily: If your ear drum is bulging from an infection or fluid, the only way to clear it immediately is to have it drained by an ENT specialist.  Occasionally, the ear drum will rupture if the infection causes enough pressure.  Most will resolve with antibiotics, time, or both.

Otitis Media: If the doctor said the ear was bulging he/she diagnosed it as a middle ear infection.  This is quite painful and would also cause your hearing to be decreased because of the fluid behind your eardrum. The treatment would generally 
be an antibiotic.   If the pain has not improved in a couple of days we would usually change the antibiotic.  Call your doctor and tell them what is happening.

Not necesarily: If it does, it would have anyway.Most middle ear infections build up of mucous and pus behind the ear drum.If it ruptures, it often does the first day in aggressive infections. If stable, it actually does not allow pressure effects of altitude to do anything.

Bulging eardrums: Bulging eardrums reflect fluid behind the eardrum. can be due to infection-/post infection or  allergies, rarely injury. May be  a nidus for infection/ hearing  issues. Discuss w/ doc methods to decrease the fluid - antihistamines, decongestants and assess whether allergies especially food allergies(milk) may be a cause and if controlling  them could limit the fluid.  f/u/w/allergist/ ENT

Eustachian Tube: Your middle ear is trying to equalize but can't. Sounds like there is still fluid present in the middle ear and can't drain out the eustachian tube.
