May be your back: A bad knock-knee deformity can make the knee give way becasue it is mechanically unstable, but when the problem is with the knee it usually feels like it wants to give out, but doesn't actually do it.  When the knee just goes out on you like its not there; its typically a pinched nerve in your back. Do you have any back pain or numbess with this?

This : This sounds like a possible injury to a ligament in your knee. A diagnosis can be made by your primary care provider, or an orthopedist. An x-ray followed by an MRI will likely be ordered. This is a situation where you should be evaluated instead of trying to "fix" the problem on your own. You may need surgery depending on the type of imjury you sustained. In the meantime ice your knee, rest it, and use an ace bandage (not too tight); you can also take an ani-inflammatory medication for the pain and swelling (i.e. Advil (ibuprofen) or motrin).

Such symptoms as popping, locking, catching, clicking, or giving way can be symptoms of ligament injury.  Cartilage, bone, tendons and other structures can also become inflamed and result in knee instability and pain.  You need a knee exam and possibly X-rays to delineate the cause and treatment.
