Start with RICE: I'm sorry to hear of your discomfort. Did you injury your knee? Regardless, i recommend you  start with rice, and the "c" can be accomplished with the ace bandage you mentioned. With the sensation that your knee is going to "give out" you should plan to see an orthopedist, especially if it does not get better soon. You may need bracing, an injection, pt, or surgery depending on severity of injury.

To have pain in the: Back of the knee few things should be considered, you may have a cyst behind the knee, you may have varicose veins inflammation, get checked.

Possible meniscus: You need to be seen by an orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate your knee for a possible meniscus tear. You need an exam and an mri.
If torn, arthroscopic surgery can trim the tear and improve your symptoms quickly.
This is a picture of your meniscus seen here.  It is the shock absorber between the femur and the tibia cartilage surfaces. This one is normal.

Have it checked out: There are lots of causes of knee pain.  If your knee hurts and it hasn't gotten better in 2-3 weeks your should see your primary care provider or an orthopedist for an evaluation.  They can listen to your symptoms, examine your knee, and determine if any other testing (xrays, mri, etc.) may be needed.

Time to see doc..: Knee effusion can be from infection (i.E lyme), rheumatologic disease/arthritis, trauma, gout, bleeding in (hemophilia) the knee etc... It is not possible to tell exactly what you have or to better advise you since the information you provided is so limited. Thorough history and exam are very important for an accurate diagnosis..Please consult doc for eval. Motrin/aleve may help a bit. Good luck to you.

Have evaluation...: I'm sorry to learn of your discomfort. Can you recall an injury? The symptoms that you describe may indicate a meniscal tear. There are several types of meniscal tears (see pic). Common symptoms include pain, swelling, clicking/ popping, locking/ catching, giving way, and/ or limited range of motion. You should seek an orthopedic evaluation if your symptoms don't subside in the near future.

Depends: If you have been diagnosed with chondromalacia then you can certainly expect pain when straightening your knee after having it bent.  That being said, the pain would usually be in the front of the knee at the knee cap rather than in the knee joint itself. Your condition affects the patellofemoral joint located in front of the knee joint proper.
