That is the shape : Every one has different shaped head due to many different factors . Your head is flat in the back is the way your head is. As long as you grew alright as a child and there are no other symptoms or problems since birth . There should be no problem  . Head shape can be affected during birth and after birth as the head is growing and also due to genetic factors .

See below: I think you me your child's head. The back of the head can be flat, which is related to the child sleeping on his/her back. As time goes on, the flattening usually resolves. As long as your child's doctor is not concerned about your child's ability to move his/her head, then nothing to worry about.

hi. my son is just over 5 months and he has a flat spot at the back of his head. how can i sort this out?

Sort ?: This is normal in an infant who spends most of his time on his back either sleeping or awake. The skull is composed of several bone plates that shift with the force of gravity. Once the  kid begins to spend more time upright in sitting,or on his belly, the forces change &amp; the shape will too. It will seem more "normal" by 1 yr. If you feel it is too flat discuss it with his doc.

Yes: Yes this is generally a normal finding.  The skull of a baby is very malleable and still "growing".  The shape can still change at this point.

Speak with your primary doctor if you are concerned.

Not unusual and...: This is not at all uncommon- most people have a slightly misshapen skull! 
As for being self-conscious, I am guessing many if not most do not even notice- and hair can go a long way to camouflage this.
As for anything to help, I advise you consult with a cranial osteopath- a series of gentle treatments over time should lessen this and improve your health!

See your doctor: It is difficult to give an opinion without seeing it.If there all your life could be a cyst and now painful could have gotten infected so need to be see to get a diagnosis

Plagiocephaly: You describe positional flattening that has become very common.  Back to sleep has left many children with flattening of back of the head that corrects over 6 to 9 months.  Helmet treatment may help early on, but normal brain growth will correct this over time.

Depends: By the time baby is spending more of her time upright & not laying down, gravity is no longer aggravating the process as much & it has a chance to round out. If the skull is visibly distorted, shifting one ear& part of the face  forward as seen from above, a specialized helmet can be worn to help speed the reshaping. Most become un-noticeable with time & as hair thickens.
