When they ask for it: Breast milk or formula are balanced nutrition that provides the proper balance of fluids to nutrients for infants. Water supplements are not necessary. It can be offered, but excess water just means more wet diapers. I find letting grandma or friends offer an ounce or two occasionally lets them participate in infant nurturing, which is socially a good idea. But it is not necessary.

See below: Pedialyte is only recommended for a child with vomiting and diarrhea. Discuss the addition of water with your child's provider. There is usually no indication to give just plain water.

The : The best ways to treat a cough are:

-drink plenty of fluids 
-keep a glass of water by his bed at night 
-use a humidifier if the air is dry 
-eat a spoonful of honey, or drink apple juice, or chicken broth to help with any "coughing jags" 
-research shows that these methods are as effective as over the counter cough medicines.

If he experiences any respiratory distress, he needs immediate medical attention. The signs of respiratory distress are: 
-rapid breathing (more than 60 times a minute) 
-grunting or gasping with breathing 
-flaring of the nostrils 
-working hard and using extra muscles to breathe such as sucking in at the neck or under the rib cage 
-blue or dusky coloring 
-change in speech or level of alertness

reasons to call his doctor are:
- fever
- unable/refusal to drink
- concern for dehydration
- a cough that isn't improving after a week.

Mgt/suggestion: It is possible to aspirate food into the airway. The lung has defenses to clear the food before it can cause problems if it is a small amount. If you continue to cough or have any problems breathing, a follow up visit and chest radiograph is advisable.

Eustachian tube prob: The structure that usually keeps fluid from accumulating in the middle ear (the eustachian tube) is angled differently inside the infant and child than in the adult.  Until they grow larger and the angle of the tube changes, fluids consumed while laying flat are more likely to irritate or enter the middle ear space, possibly leading to infections.  Water is less of a problem than other fluids.

Insufficient saliva/: Increase fluid consumption. At this time of year, if you have indoor animals....Allergy can be possible culprit.

You don't treat: let the baby 's  pediatrician evaluate and handle the condition  or take to ER to make sure did not have appendicitis .once ruled out will be fine .

Worried, but ok: It sounds most likely to be a respiratory virus.  This should hit it's peak around 3-5 days, with cough and congestion going away after 10-14 days.  Watch for fever over 102.5, poor urine output, lethargy, irritability, breathing over 40/min, difficulty breathing with stomach and neck muscle use, or wheezing. If those develop, bring him in.

6 months: Younger babies normally do not drink water.  They just drink breast milk or formula when they get thirsty.  Water is a thinner liquid than milk, so babies sometimes have trouble drinking water (but they drink milk just fine).  With older babies that are already on solid foods, they can try a bit of water sometimes during mealtimes. If a baby likes breast milk or formula, plain water isn't needed.
