Paraspinal Muscles?: Paraspinal muscles position the spine. Keeping these healthy reduces arthritis, disc and nerve (radiculopathy) problems. 
I have severe lumbar arthritis, Not getting surgery. I do core strengthening and flexibility exercises every day. 
Google exercises on core muscular strengthening, low back mobility, hamstring stretching.
Then do the exercises as often as needed. Every day is not too often.

You may want to be more careful and work on core strengthening to help support those discs. Exercise, hydrate, and keep in shape and as long as you don't notice symptoms, you may just be part of that 40%!

Spinal cord lies between the legs of the tower, and discs sit over the body (dense circle of bone). towers touch at the bases at FACETS, joints, which glide with spine movements. As these become worn (arthritic) movement causes inflammation. Spinal nerves exit the cord behind the bodies.  All get irritated and pain.
