Yes!: I'm assuming there is a problem with your eyesight?  If so, then yes optic neuritis can affect the vision and is associated with multiple sclerosis.  The nerve sheaths around the nerves get affected and this can cause decreased vision, pain with eye movement , and/or double vision.

would an ophthalmologist be able to detect multiple sclerosis eye symptoms?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If you are having eye issues, an ophthalmologist can diagnose them and occasionally treat them.  He will probably refer you to either a neuro-ophthalmologist  or a neurologist, both of which specialize in problems related to ms.

A VERY FEW: Most frequent is optic neuritis which is loss of vision associated with pain, but if not controlled, could eventuate in optic atrophy.  Lesions in brainstem can cause double vision, and sometimes the objects can jump.  Pars planitis, a type of uveitis has also been found in ms, and this causes blurring and perhaps eye irritation.

Common? How so?: Careful of the hallway lore that people speak in dimly lit corridors.  I have many MS patients who have never complained of that symptom and some who have. MS is diagnosed by a specialist and by taking a careful detailed history of things the person has been experiencing to see if it fits a "story" consistent with the diagnosis. MRI of the brain and spinal cord are also important to the diagnosis.

: What you describe is very unlikely the initial symptom of MS. By the way, what is the reason you think of this debilitated condition in the first place? Take care.

Accepted Answer

Several: Most common is optic neuritis, with unilateral loss of vision, pain on eye motion, and washout of colors.  Abnormal eye movements with double vision may occur with brainstem inflammation, (mlf syndrome), various eye incoordination issues can occur, and vertigo could be due to eye or ear.  Some  develop optic atrophy, and others may get uveitis or macular edema associated with meds.  Pars planitis?

my eye has been twitching for wks.i have dry eye but heard it was a sign of multiple sclerosis... my mom and sister have ms... should i get mri?

Stress?: An eye twitch can be due to numerous things, including stress. If you are concerned, call your physician.

Infectious disease: consultstion and treatment with 2-3 antibibiotics, routine blood cultures are needed.

Accepted Answer

Not a sign: Eyelid twitching is very common and usually due to stress, caffeine, sleep deprivation, dehydration or due to medications etc. If you dvelop any other neurological problems then seek medical attention. Take care.

anxiety & multiple sclerosis sure do have the same symptoms.how do you tell the difference? doc won't test for ms,even though twitching & eye problem.

MS vs anxiety: Can be tricky in some cases, but usually anxiety has "extra" symptoms and signs which are unlikely to be caused by MS.  Also signs of anxiety may be fleeting.  Eye twitching alone is not likely to be MS.  I do not know what your eye symptoms are, but a dilated eye exam can rule out involvement of the optic nerve which is a key finding for MS.
