I do not think so: Just because someone has MRSA , you do not acquire unless you are closely associated with that person. It is very unlikely to contract the infection if you take proper precautions such as wearing gloves etc.

The best approach: is to take a culture of the drainage from
an infected site to see if it is indeed MRSA.. if it is a skin infection with bumps but no drainage a trial of antibiotics active against MRSA and a response to it would be suggestive that you have MRSA , but there's no substitue from getting a culture.

can mrsa travel to the spine?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Yes it can get there by hematogenous spread, that is once it gets into your blood stream from either a cut, a wound, etc. It can get to any part of your body. Not because it is mrsa, as any other bacteria, fungus, etc. Can do just that. But if concerned ask your doctor, and don't just assume you have MRSA in your spine.

: The body has a regular germ population on many surfaces that comes &amp; goes. If yours includes MRSA it is commonly housed in your nasal passages. Using OTC antibiotic ointment 2x daily at the nasal entrance, taking baths several times weekly with a cup of bleach in the water &amp; taking a PO anti-staph med can break the cycle of carriage. It is easy to re-acquire MRSA from the environment.

i work in a health care setting- if i got a cut that got mrsa in it would it show the symptoms?

No: Mrsa is in the commuity we worry because it is tough to treat with regular antibiotics. Mrsa in wound bed we have healed. So even if  you contracted MRSA in your cut local bactroban (mupirocin) works to remove this.

MRSA is everywhere: Mrsa is a bacteria that is everywhere, not just on infected people.      Mrsa is considered an opportunistic pathogen, which means that if it is at the right place and the wrong time in a susceptible individual, then problems can arise.      Proper hand washing will most likely suffice.

i saw dr. okamato yesterday and he was absolutely the best!!  i just want someone to tell me that as a teacher i should not go to work with mrsa lesions visible on my face.  i know the ethical  answer is no,  i guess i just need reassurance. ?

I can't tell from: your question whether you are wishing to go to work or not. This is what NIOSH/US agency for occupational health says: Restrict workers with wound drainage that cannot be covered and contained with a clean, dry bandage; Restrict workers with activities where it is likely others may come in contact; food handlers. If you can cover face lesions with bandage, you may work. Hope this helps. Stay well.

MRSA: Mrsa is a type of bacterial infection that can affect anyone. However, some people may have a higher risk of getting this type of infection. For example, people who are in hospitals or healthcare facilities may acquire healthcare-associated mrsa. There is also a community-associated mrsa. Risk factors for getting MRSA include living in unsanitary places, or  contact sports like football, wrestling.

what precautions should a person take who had mrsa in the past? can it come back?

Accepted Answer

Precautions: Wash all contaminated clothing with hot water. Use an antibacterial soap for washing especially after exercise (unless you are prone to eczema). Use bactroban (mupirocin) ointment nightly for one week each month under fingernails and on inner rim of nostrils. Wear weight gloves and use clean towels on gym equipment at health clubs, swimming pools and gym locker rooms.

i was tested for mrsa and it came back positive, should i get tsted again after treatment?

Accepted Answer

No: You are now more likely to have repeat MRSA infections so being seen quickly for infections will help as well as using hibiclens soap for a month.  It is not forever....But MRSA can spread in families so a little extra precaution goes a long way. It is not necessary to test after the treatment as the culture said what antibiotic is best.
