reoccurring staph infections from overcolonized nose happening on face (swabbed, not mrsa). i would decolonize using bactroban, but after a couple months it keeps coming back, now its not responding as good to the cream. immune system is good. ideas?

Daily nasal irrigati: Try daily nasal irrigation and perhaps a nasal spray containing xylitol.  In the meanwhile, make sure that you are not in close contact with another staph carrier. I would even check the pets out as potential carriers.

Staph in nose: Not an uncommon finding. Why was the culture done. If no obvious infection, antibiotics not likely needed.

Trouble with Staph: This bacterium is particularly hardy and may be persisting in your environment-if indeed you've tried a regimen to 'eradicate' it from your body. It may be worth throwing out old razors, personal hygiene items, etc or at least try to sterilize them in a dishwasher. Towels, used linens etc will need a 'hot wash' to disinfect. Then, consider personal contacts in the family for possible re-infection.

Infectious diseaseMD: Is it cultured MRSA or regular staph. You should speak to an infectious disease md for treatment. Do you scratch yourself? Itch? Possibly at night? You may have MRSA under the nails and seeding the skin. 
Normlly you treat MRSA and it resolves you have to culture it find out what it is sensitive to and use those antibiotics. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds, and zyvox is made specifically for mrsa
culture your nose too.

See below: Staphylococcus are a genus of bacteria usually divided into coagulase negative and positive. The coag positive staph are staph aureus which cause many infections.  Mrsa are resistant to the semisynthetic penicillins like methicillin. Mssa are sensitive to these antibiotics. Coag neg staph include many species like staphylococcus epidermidis which colonize normal skin and infrequently cause disease.

Culture: A sample needs to be sent to a lab for testing to see which antibiotics successfully kill the bacteria.  Mrsa means methicillin resistant staph aureus, methicillin is an antibiotic in the same class as penicillin.  If methicillin doesn't work to kill the staph- it is labeled mrsa.

Yes: If a boil or abscess is present a specimen of the drainage or pus can be sent to the lab and a culture of the organisms is made. If staph aureus is grown on the culture then next it is grown on a culture with methicillin to see if the methicillin will inhibit growth of the staph. If growth not inhibited the staph aureus is methicillin .Resistant.

Mrsa, a type of stap: Mrsa is a type of staph that is drug resistant. Staph/mrsa can cause a variety of things. Commonly, skin infections/boils.

They can get into the blood stream and cause infections. Once it gets into the blood stream, it can go anywhere and cause an infection at that site.

Staph aureus: We are all colonized with staph aureus. Whether or not we become infected with these organisms depends on multiple different factors.  The ones that are in your cat are the same as the ones in your gut, or in your nasopharynx or on your skin.  They have the same disease producing mechanisms.  Whether they will infect you is problematic.
