Yes: Although not that simple.  When someone has MRSA pneumonia, the droplets that come out when they cough can contain MRSA.  MRSA is not airborne except in droplets and it doesn't survive long outside.   It is acquired by touching a person or object that has live MRSA bacteria on it.  Hand washing is best for prevention.  the patient with MRSA pneumonia should be isolated and wear a mask.

Few reasons: Mrsa(methicillin resistant sa)pneumonia has increased dramatically in last two decades.Frequent and prolonged ventilatory support of an aging, often chronically ill population is factor.Community-acquired MRSA pneumonia has become more prevalent.This type of pneumonia affects younger patients, following infection with influenza virus infection.Appropriate prompt antibiotic therapy/hospitalization.

MRSA  over kill: Mrsa is just the replacement for prsa. Staph germs were initially killed with penicillin but became resistant after a few years. Mrsa staph is everywhere & 70% of outpatient pustules & abscesses are MRSA & responsive to regular treatment. It't time we quit looking at MRSA as the new aids & just delt with our germs as we always do. If your kid got pneumonia from it he would be in an icu.

Maybe: Mrsa is everywhere. It is responsible for 60-70% of simple abscesses acquired through community exposure. If your child is exposed to other kids and or adults at day care, school or the local grocery store, she could pick up the strain through casual contact.

Probably not...: Most patients with community-acquired MRSA have the skin symptoms that you describe. With treatment, the infection is not likely to become a systemic infection so pneumonia and certainly death are not likely to occur. If the infection were to become systemic, you would experience fever, chills, etc. If you do develop these symptoms, see your doctor or go to the er, but this is unlikely w/ therapy.

MRSA: Many of the organisms populating your nose and throat have the potential to produce pneumonia, but you have many defense mechanisms that prevent this. It is not until these mechanisms are compromised or the number of organisms is overwhelming that they will produce clinically relevant disease.

It's possible...: ...Particularly if any of the "red raised bumps" are pustules ("white-heads"). If so, ask your doctor to unroof one of them and culture the contents. Mrsa will usually require extra treatment, over & above whatever is being used to treat the pneumonia.
