Several red bites : with a small pimple(pustule)in the center describes a fire ant bite.Any possible exposure?Soy sause takes away the sting(also works for bee/wasp stings).Must also consider cellulitis.If gets worse,c ur doc.

Mrsa: It appears that his skin is colonized by MRSA. A 10-14 day course of an effective antibiotic may clear the bacteria living on his skin. However, this should be discussed with a specialist in infectious diseases.

my son has a staph infection but it has swollen quite a bit since this morning. he started penicillin today. what should i do?

Need more info: Where is the infection? Does the swelling interfere with breathing? What is his temperature? Is he eating and drinking? If any of these things are not in good order you may take your son to the casualty room of a nearby hospital, in case you can not get hold of your doctor. Make sure he drinks enough water so that his urine is mostly colorless, You may give him acetaminophen for fever.

Could be either/both: Staph infections arise in various wounds and bug bites can be the primary event that becomes  secondarily infected.If there was any puss expressed from the site, it is evidence of an infection.Most studies show the majority of these today are MRSA.

Infections: Nobody can tell if an infected lesion is due to Staph or another bacteria without a culture.  However, if a sore or wound, is hot, has pus, is tender, or increasing pain or redness, it is likely infected.  A bug bite can be red and a little warm and itchy, but no pus or severe pain is present.  Apply Bacitracin and a bandaid after cleaning with dilute soap and water twice a day.  If worse: to MD!

This : This is tough to answer without a picture.  There are several possibilities including bites (fleas or other), eczema or allergic contact dermatitis, lichen planus, folliculitis (staph infection), and others.  I doubt bed bugs given the location.  I would recommend you try a moisturizer such as cerave cream twice daily and if not better after a few days consider a trip to the dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment options.  Bites are common in kids so that is certainly a possibility.  If they are bites, avoidance plus a steroid gel might be beneficial. I hope that helps.

Severity: It depends a subtle early staph can be treated conservatively warm soaks antibiotic ointments but if it get larger, hotter, painful than you will need antibiotics.
At times staph can cause sepsis and get into the blood stream if not treated properly.
If you have diabetes, cancer, on chemo, immunocomprimised then you must see a doctor and forgo the conservative plan.

Symptoms clear: You will know when the original symptoms are clear and you finish your antibiotic course.  What exactly to look for depends on the source and location of the infection in question.
