17 yr old daughter has mono and morbilliform rash. amoxicillin ceased wed. prednisone and benadbut spreading body rash & severe itch. no fever. help?

Rash : Using amoxicillin with mono frequently causes an itchy uncomfortable rash.  It lasts a while.  The prednisone may not be the answer.   I would use Zyrtec (cetirizine) and add Benedryl both if needed.   Drink lots of fluids and rest. Bathe too. Mono can last 2-3,weeks and it is miserable.  It is a lesson learned about over using antibiotics.   Sorry you were the one to experience this.   It will get better.

Unlikely to help: The rash is due to factors that circulate in the blood & effect their cosmetic changes (rash) beneath the skin surface. No externally applied cream or medication will make any difference in the timing of its disappearance.

Yes and no: No clinician would take chances. The history and symptoms would tilt the balance either way. Most patients end up having a lumbar puncture if there is any clinical suspicion for meningitis. Remember that rashes may be in different stages and that will make impossible to differentiate.

Erythema multiforme: No but it may be caused by soemthing that is such as hsv.

Can be.: Em is usually minor but can be fatal.  The minor form is much more common and self limited. The major form involves mucous membranes, is much more extensive and includes systemic symptoms.

Fat distribution: This is very rare and both parents are typically carriers. The tissue under the skin has almost no fat under it. Instead, fat accumulates inside muscles, liver, heart. Triglycerides get very high and patients are resistant to insulin.  Kids may develop early pubic hair and get diabetes. There are many more details. This condition is very serious.
