Sort of: All major mood disorders occur in both sexes with a slightly higher percentage in women.   A form of depressed mood that only occurrs in women would be pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder which occurs starting a week before menses.  This is classified as being different from being "pre-menstrual"  the other disorder would be depressed mood related to menopause.

Several: There are two basic mood disorders, unipolar depression and bipolar disorder.  In unipolar depression, patients do not become manic or hypomanic and in bipolar disorder, although people can become manic, they are usually depressed.  That being said, here is a partial list of mood disorders: mood disorder related to substance abuse, mood disorder related to a medical illness, dysthymia, cyclothymia.

You are not alone: Everyone responds to different meds differently.  If you look at the latesy studies, it is common to not respond to several different trials.  It isn't necessarily you, as we still don't clearly understand what causes mood disorders and how to treat them.  If you are having trouble, i would suggest talking with your doctor. However bipolar, sub use and personality issues need special treatment.

Fortunately treatment is available.

Depends: It depends on the study...Most studies are out paient but some may require hospitalization...You have to check what the study design is, contact the people running the study.

Patience: It's easy to be frustrated with a child who is angry, sullen, amotivated, has a drop in grades, is defiant, looks sloppy etc.  Those are behaviors that might be seen in a depressed child. A bipolar child may be even more of a handful. When i work with difficult people, i just keep reminding myself  that they are suffering. This allows me to feel some empathy - especially when I am losing patience.

Length of time also: Normal mood variations usually don't last as long as a mood disorder, & aren't as intense.  For depression, the symptoms have to be present for at least 2 weeks.  Also, normal mood variations don't include the changes in sleep, appetite, and energy that depression has.  There is also usually something that can improve a "mood variation, " but full depression doesn't respond to such things.

Mood disorders: Women outnumber men in most cases, especially young adults with depression, males of younger age outnumber women with bipolar illness.

Yes: Many studies show that lower hormones can lead to depression and anxiety in women going through menopause.  Speak with your physician about HRT or consider bio identical hrt.  I have watched women improve their life, health and mood with bhrt.

Very: May be higher than thought- all teenagers are moody but if it is causing decrease in function seek a professional psychiatrist.
