Length of time also: Normal mood variations usually don't last as long as a mood disorder, & aren't as intense. For depression, the symptoms have to be present for at least 2 weeks. Also, normal mood variations don't include the changes in sleep, appetite, and energy that depression has. There is also usually something that can improve a "mood variation, " but full depression doesn't respond to such things.
