Most common: The first trimester is the most common time for a miscarriage, which is why 1st OB appointments are often after 10-13 weeks.  At this time, it could be from a  host of reasons ranging from hormonal, to genetic, to medications, to anatomic.  Because they are so common in the 1st trimester, we usually do not begin to evaluate miscarriages unless you have had more than 2.

im 8 weeks pregnant (estimated). my hcg tested 31194 and then 29587 two days later. my doc said this is normal, as the fluctuation was so small. am i potentially miscarrying? i have no miscarriage symptoms.

HCG level: There is a plateau reached , and variation in HCG can be secondary to a lab error .  If you have bleeding, see your OB provider for an ultrasound.  At eight weeks, the ovary stops progesterone production, and if the placenta does not make the equivalent amount of progesterone at that time, you might see fluctuations in the HCG level, but this is soon corrected.

: Talk to your doctor and get HCG level and repeat it 2-3 days later. In a viable pregnancy the HCG level would double over 2-3 days.

Miscarriage: First of all you need to be pregnant to have a miscarriage.  If you are pregnant the most common signs in early pregancy would be bleeding and/or cramping. It is best to be evaluated by your doctor and further tests can be done to see if your pregnancy is ok.

Implantation/miscarr: There is no substantial blood connection between an implanted fertilized egg and the uterine blood supply, so if the early embryo fails, there are no real ways to detect this by symptoms.  The well being of a successful early pregnancy can be followed by serial HCG serum tests (quantitative).
