No: Milk thistle has not been shown to help in fatty liver. If fatty liver is caused by obesity, diabetes, or high triglycerides, then improvment can occur with weight loss, blood sugar control, and lowering triglyceride levels. Vitamin e 400 units twice a day may be helpful in patients with fatty liver and elevated liver enzmes in the blood.

Thistle w/fat liver: Per research  milk thistle  can help in some hepatitis.  Treatment  of  fatty liver consists of lifestyle modification ; weight loss . exercise vaccination against hep B and A  and avoidance of other liver toxins/drugs.  Check LFTs pre &amp;  at 1 month. f/u w/doc

Can be helpfull: Yes. This can be beneficial but does not replace good liver living. To ensure good liver health either don’t drink alcohol or limit your intake (1 drink for females & 2 for males/ day).  Be proactive with hepatitis b (& a) vaccination.  Avoid risks like sharing needles (iv drug use), unprotected sex or lack of sanitation with piercings & tattoos.  Protect from blood and fecal contact when&gt;&gt;.

Not sure it helps...: The medical literature is quite mixed as to the potential value of milk thistle in treating the liver. Lots of things of course cause elevated liver enzymes, & milk thistle certainly may be of little use for many liver diseases. Talk to your liver specialist if herbal products may benefit your particular liver issue. Also, pills per se are not bad for the liver as long as you use the correct drug!

Rather safe: Nicotine isn't a particularly concerning chemical in liver disease.  If you have to choose your "ills" nicotine gum is safer than smoking cigarettes. Milk thistle, which is often combined with choline, is also relatively well tolerated.  It does have some side effects mostly benign gastrointestinal upset(which even a sugar pill can cause).If you don't have liver disease is less clear of a benefit

More hype than data: Active ingredient in milk thistle (silymarin) helps when given IV in animals-limited data in humans. Oral milk thistle isn't the same-limited absorption of silymarin. Lots of people use it however. Dandelion root similar limitations- is a diuretic (will make you pee). Find out cause of the elevated enzymes-infections (esp viral), meds, toxicities, autoimmune, alcohol, other. Rx underlying cause

You did it: Milk thistle has shown some usefulness in helping the liver overcome short-term injury from some medications, but I'm not aware of any theoretical or empirical-study-based reason to think it's going to help your liver. Truth is, your liver heals itself wonderfully, and the vast majority of problem drinkers who sober up get a perfectly healthy organ back in a few weeks. Keep up the good work.

Cirrhosis unlikely: Glad you're not drinking. Milk thistle protects from toxicity of some chemotherapeutic agents but I am not aware of any good work to suggest it helps common non-alcoholic fatty liver. I am going to assume you do not have hepatitis C or any other serious illness. Your best help is sensible eating and being physically fit.

Possibly: There have been studies demonstrating benefit of milk thistle in a variety of liver problems, possibly in part due to increasing the concentration of glutathione in the liver.  Glutathione is used to neutralize toxins.
