Milk allergy: Stop the milk and if the symptoms clear, after fewc weeks give the milk again and if the child gets the same symptoms, that is confirming your suspicion.

Unlikely: True milk allergy is rare &amp; most evident by bloody, frothy stools among other issues. The physical property of tiny infant nasal passages make it more prone to congestion by airborne irritants/dust/fragrance/etc. that baby tries to flush out with mucus. This narrows an already tight space much more in infants than an older kid/adult. Nasal wash out with saline helps as does cleaning the air.

my daughter has swollen tonsils & a stuffy nose. it causes her to snore & occasionally stop breathing. could it be caused by a milk allergy?

Swollen tonsils: She is likely suffering from tonsillitis (viral in nature as she also has stuffy nose). I would recommend getting her swabbed for strep as it is easily treatable with antibiotics. Now her snoring and breathing definitely needs to be evaluated by her pediatrician - it may be due to large adenoids or tonsils and resulting in osa (obstructive sleep apnea).

allergy rast/blood (ige) test reports no milk allergy. is it possible i could still be allergic to dairy? suffering from thick nasal mucus.

Yes: Either RAST (replaced by ImmunoCap IgE) and prick skin testing can miss some food allergies.  I often test a patient to the food itself when the history and test findings do not match.  Recently I was about to challenge a young boy to walnut (history positive, skin test negative) when the skin test turned out to be highly positive to the actual nut. Mold &amp; mite allergies are more likely in HK.

baby started coughing very badly after each milk bottle since 6 month old. can it be post nasal drip or milk allergy?

More likely reflux: Almost all infants have some backwash of stomach contents up their swallow tube. This can start out mild and increase as they develop more abdominal muscle tone. I see this producing odd symptoms like a cough  as the material triggers the air inlet. True milk allergy is rare and post nasal drip is usually not an issue. Your doc can help you sort this out.

10mnth baby @4-6mnths hives, red itchy, watery eyes, @8mnths skin test neg for milk allergy, get runny tummy 10-15mins after dairy products vomit sometimes, what are possible causes, wil it go away and wen? what substitutes can be given?

Mgt.: I would suggest a non milk based formula, and substitution with soy. If the symptoms persist, additional GI evaluation by a specialist suggested.Has the baby's blood been sent for total IgE and eosinophil count?

Milk allergy: Milk allergic patients need to avoid all forms of cow's milk including cheese, yogurt and ice cream.  It's important to read labels as milk proteins such as whey and casein are in many food products.  Goat's milk is not a good idea as 90% will react to it as well.

No: You have to be pretty morbid to do such a thing but milk won't make you do that.

Craving food: While i periodically hear of patients claiming that they are allergic to certain foods that they crave, I am not aware of any bona-fide study that ever addressed this.

what is a good source of calcium if you have a milk allergy ?

Accepted Answer

Tums (calcium carbonate): Tums are calcium carbonate, one or two a day with vitamin d and you should be good to go.
