It depends.: What you describe may be coming from your muscles as in a "pulled muscle" or may be coming from another part of your body such as your spine.  Generally a muscle strain or sprain will resolve up to  four to six weeks and rest, gentle stretches along with ice or heat, and over the counter antiinflammatory medications (if not contraindicated) may be helpful.  After that time get a medical evaluation

Be Alert/check up?: Any pain like you have requires close monitoring and watch to see if it is settling down on its own or progressing. If it is  not better in 2-3 weeks, you should seek medical check up and find the cause. A physical exam and urine check should be the first step, followed by a CT scan of the abdomen if indicated based on findings on physical check up by your doctor.

i been having a sharp stabbing pain in my mid-back, mainly on the left side. if i lay down i can't get up because it hurts real bad. what could it be?

Back pain: Can be many things in that area including a muscle spasm, pinched nerve or even a kidney stone or urinary tract issue. Depending on what brought it on should help answer that. Trying an anti inflammatory and some heat may help if its muscular related. If it persists or gets worse then go and get evaluated.

More info: There are many things that can give you those symptoms. When do you get pain? What type? How long does it last? Anything make it better? Anything make it worse? Does food affect the pain? Have you had any surgery ? How long has it been there? Have you tried any medications? Did they work? Did you injure yourself? Pulled muscle etc? Has anyone done any studies? Worse with stress?

Could be a stone: From your description, your pain may be from a stone passing down from your kidney toward your bladder.  As it does so, your pain will tend to migrate from back, to front, to groin.  Usually you will have an increase in urgency/frequency of urination as the stone approaches the bladder.  Blood in the urine may be visible. Your best bet is to be evaluated by a urologist.  Go to the er if any fever.

Back/side pain: Interesting.  The fact that is worse with rest/sleep in better with exercise suggests it is a muscular issue.  Some muscle injuries issues tighten with rest and improve with activity due to increased blood flow to muscle. Best to see good physiatrist or sports med doc to evaluate.
