Depends: While some soreness after strenuous physical exercise is expected, you should adapt am exercise routine that minimizes pain, risk of injury and optimizes benefits of regular workouts. Initial consultation with a PE instructor is therefore very helpful to guide you through the process of do's and dont's. You can also google safe exercise routines, depending on what you want to focus on.

It is possible that: adding exercise to your lifestyle can trigger pain.  Please check w/your doc to make sure this exercise plan is appropriate for you.  Begin gently.  Many folks do well w/brisk walking 20-30 minutes daily.  Peace and good health.

Low back pain: Low back pain is a very complex issue with more potential causes than could be listed here. Your primary care doctor may be the best place to start. They can determine if an Orthopedic, Neurologic or Neurosurgical evaluation is warranted.

painful muscular type pain in my mid back for 3 days. hurts to the touch and very painful to sneeze. active but no new exercise. likely muscle strain?

Probably: Given your age, about 70% of all cases of acute back pain are self limited and due to "myofascial" irritation/strain. Sometimes sneezing can aggravate pain if there is a small tear of the outer coating of the disc capsule but even so there is an excellent chance of total resolution.  Stay active, lift using your legs ( don't bend your back forward) and consider ice packs/OTC NSAID for 3-7 days.

mid back pain +2 yrs, comes & goes daily. mri spine clear, ultrasound of abd clear, and x-ray of chest clear (all ~1 yr ago). no stomach pains. ibuprofen & mild exercise help sometimes. has worsened. what would you ask 4? should i think cancerous?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Wish you good health!

Spinal stabilization: To strengthen and stabilize the mid back are to build the muscles:  Use an elastic exercise band looped under your feet and held taught by your hands with your arms down:  arch back using your mid back muscles.  Alternate reps with lifting the arms straight overhead as far back as you can.  Do build the horizontals, hold the elastic band out in front and pull to the side with the arms straight.

i've had mid back discomfort for about a week now. what could be the cause of this?

See a physician: There a numerous possibilities of back pain from muscles strain, to disc herniation, to pancreatitis, to kidney stones, to a kidney infection. Persistent back warrants further evaluation by a physician in person.

See PCP: You need a definite diagnosis therefore I recomendyou see your pcp and allow he/she to evaluate you and offer appropriate treatment if necessary. Radiological may be required at that time.

PT, yoga: Passive treatment like massage or muscle stimulation work well but don't always last. Active treatments like strengthening and stretching can lead to longer lasting relief. Physical therapy and yoga are great. Any back issue should be evaluated by a doc first before starting something new.

could fibro concentrate just in the upper shoulders and the mid back?

Not likely: Fibromyalgia pain is typically more diffuse and symetric..Meaning equally on both sides of the body. If it is just your shoulders/upper back areas are involved, it is more likely to be muscle strain etc...It can be relatively determined by a physical exam from your doc...
