: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. : Further work up, if needed, depends on the total red blood cell count. If the total red cell count is high or on the higher limit of normal range, you or this person has a condition called thalassemia trait and hemoglobin electrophoresis can confirm this condition but not necessary. However, if your total red cell count is low which means you probably have iron deficiency anemia.

A short answer: Hypochromic microcytic anemia is usually due to not enough iron available to make hemoglobin. Sidero-achrestic anemia has iron available but can not incorporate into hemoglobin in bone marrow. It is associated with abnormal ringed sideroblastic red cells in blood, and can also be hypochromic microcytic. Another form of achrestic anemia is a chronic progressive macrocytic anemia.

More info needed: The most common reason for microcytic hypochromic anemia is iron defieicncy.  The most common cause of low neutrophil counts and lymphopoenia can be virally associated or antibody associated.  Hopefully, she is seeing a hematologist.  Depending on her blood counts, she may be at risk of infection.  Please make sure she is being seen properly and that oncologic issues are ruled out as well-.

OK: You have slightly elevated platelet (nl 150-450). Microcytic hypochromic may suggest an iron def or low. 1/3 of iron def people can have some level of elevation in platelet. f/u your PCP.

Not skin-but blood: Hypochromic microcytic anemia is a blood disorder that typically occurs due to iron deficiency, but may also be seen with some genetic conditions known as thalassemia. Iron deficiency can be caused by blood loss (often not detected by patient in GI tract) and/or inadequate dietary intake. It is not a skin disease. I recommend that you see your doctor to determine the cause of the anemia.
