Yes: Although there are no official studies for "flagyl" in pregnancy, millions of pregnant women have been prescribed this medication for bacterial vaginosis (bv) or trichomonas ("trich") infections without complication.  More importantly, BV in pregnancy has been linked to premature rupture of membranes, so treatment with Metronidazole during pregnancy is crucial.

BV treatment: There is no known adverse effect on babies from the amount of metronidazole in breast milk in moms taking standard doses, and most experts advise it's OK to take it while nursing. But if you want to avoid it, two opptions are metrnidazole vaginal gel (Metrogel®) which doesn't get into the blood or milk; or clinidamycin by mouth.

Metrogel: Metro gel can be used for treatment of BV and hopefully you don’t have much problem in using it correctly. If symptoms persist then consider getting examination done by a physician.

my doctor prescribed metronidazole for possible vaginal infection. i'm breastfeeding fulltime, will this affect my baby?

Nope!: Metronidazole can come in oral or vaginal suppository forms. The suppository form is not absorbed through your blood stream in the same way as the oral form, and is even safe enough to use during pregnancy. Additionally, the american academy of pediatrics have found no studies that have demonstrated negative effects on your baby if you use the oral form during breastfeeding.

i am on metronidazole vaginal gel for 5 nights. i have paused breastfeeding & have been pumping & dumping my milk. however, my daughter wont sleep unless i nurse her to sleep. can this small amount of milk affect her negatively in the future?

Nursing issue: The current expert consensus concerning vaginal metronidazole and breast feeding is that very little of the drug is excreted in breast milk, so you can continue nursing without any real risk. The manufacturer of the drug advises against nursing while on the drug, but subsequent research has not shown any true risk to doing so.

Several: Gi distress is most common with nausea and metallic taste in mouth.  Allergic reactions occur, and a disulfuram effect when alcohol is ingested while on Metronidazole is reported.  You should not drink alcohol within 48 hours of being on this medication.
