Tapering: It is advisable to taper off beta blockers like metoprolol to avoid rebound rises in heart rate and other sympathetic nervous system changes. Amlodopine has no beta blocking activity.

Define "help": Opiate withdrawal's tough &amp; can be dangerous if not supervised. You'll have to be more specific on the word "help?" It can attenuate symptoms but is no guarantee or panacea and must be used along with other measures. Stopping Toprol (metoprolol) XL: The most common symptom of stopping Toprol (metoprolol) is an elevated heart rate or tachycardia.  You may also see an elevated blood pressure.  In order to stop the Toprol (metoprolol) it is usually advised to wean off slowly to prevent the elevated heart rate.  I would recommend discussing with you doctor before stopping any medicine.

i have very short runs of svt. cardiology says i can stop beta blocker due to side effects. but when i went from 25 to 12.5mg of metoprolol i had more frequent episodes. doing better after 3 weeks. are the more frequent episodes from withdrawal?

: This should be discussed with your Cardiologist who knows the source of your problem and other meds your are taking.  Everyone is their own experiment when it comes to medications and the Dr who knows you can give you the best advice. My hunch would be Yes the increase in freq may be related to stepping down the BB.

: It is not rare and an individual thing. Sounds like you are one.  My advice on starting meds is to always start low and go slow. On tapering slow is good as well.  Those of Chinese descent may have differences in BB metabolism.  Discuss with your Dr. Other drugs you may be taking can also affect how your body handles BB. are there any medicines that are good for anxiety that is not anti-depressants? i'm not crazy about all side effects that go along with these not to mention the withdrawals when stopping. the withdrawal from the beta-blocker has been the worst?

: I assume you tapered the BB over some time.  I usually recommend cutting dose in 1/2 for 1-2 weeks and then in 1/2 again for 2 weeks etc. Can be tricky and everyone is different.  You body is talking to you.  Please listen and take good notes. Then share with your Dr. The two of you should be able to decide what the problem is or what is the next step to find out.

Varies per person: The way each person responds to medication varies, but yes it is possible to get side effects after being on the medication for months. Usually we would hope that your body will adjust and that the side effects will decrease. Did your doctor increase your dose? Are you taking it consistently?
