Alcohol: Can have an additive effect with beta blockers causing a further lowering of blood pressure.  Also, both alcohol (more strongly) and beta blockers like toprol (metoprolol) (less strongly) can cause depression.

Yes: Mixing drugs and alcohol is dangerous and never is a good idea. Alcohol might add to drowsiness that you might experience while taking this medication. In some cases, alcohol might decrease the effectiveness of medication. Rule of thumb: don't mix medicine and alcohol -- it's safer that way.

The question is how: much alcohol are you planning to drink.  I assume you are on metoprolol for high blood pressure, which is unusual at your age. However, alcohol ITSELF can raise blood pressure, and is one of the more common and undetected causes of secondary hypertension. Your doctor needs to know about your drinking - how much, how often. If we are talking about 1-2 glasses of wine a few times a week, no problem

Not on Xanax (alprazolam): Gilbert's is basically harmless and isn't a reason not to enjoy alcohol, but you can't drink it on when you're on Xanax (alprazolam).  You'd be placing yourself in serious danger. Keep getting good guidance -- being 19 is tough for anyone, and as you learn new skills and ways of thinking, perhaps you'll become happier and won't need these meds. When that happens, drink wisely if at all. Best wishes.

Safe enough: If the toprol (metoprolol) is being given for high blood pressure, however, alcohol can raise blood pressure. Hence, i would not take more than 3 individual beverages of alcohol per week.

Agree w Dr Seagraves: Strongly recommend against mixing abilify, alcohol. zoloft and metoprolol. Didn't your doctor and pharmacist already tell you that this was contraindcated??

Paxil (paroxetine): In few cases Paxil (paroxetine) could cause low heart beat as side effect. Metoprolol also decreases heart rate as a drug effect. Combination could cause significantly slow heart rate in your case. Because your resting heart rate with meds is 50-65. So you have to discuss with your physician.

Not a good idea: Its never a good idea to mix medication with alcohol. Although there is not a direct reaction between alcohol and a beta blocker the efffect of alcohol on blood pressure and pulse rate may make immediate use of either after the other a bad idea.To be safe I would take the beta blocker either in the morning or just before bed so that alcohol can be taken at the "usual" cocktail hour time!
