No: no. are you taking other medication that helps with mood or sleep? other antidepressant medications can cause weight gain as can being depressed. certainly talk about weight and appetite concerns with your prescribing doc. try and eat high quality low quantity foods and get some exercise. be well and good luck.

Good: L methylfolate is the bioactive form of folate, (folic acid) the one the body prefers the most. 
It prevents neural tube defects during fetal development, it also neutralizes homocysteine, a harmful chemical in our body
that could be more dangerous than high cholesterol.

what is the difference between folgard and l-methylfolate? i heard that l-methyl can help with mthfr/ preg. loss which i have is this true?

Folgard: Folgard is a multimineral tablet containing Folic Acid & vitamin b6.  L-methylfolate is the active form of folate; Folic Acid must be changed into this form in your body.  If you have one of the genetic polymorphisms of folate metabolism (it can be tested for), then the l-methylfolate will be the better option for you because your body isn't making the step from Folic Acid to active folate.

i have mthfr a1298c 3 missed miscarriages, no answers other then that...can l-methylfolate help or harm me? if so how much is safe? i am preg. now

See below: Women who are pregnant should discuss their elevated homocysteine levels with a doctor. It is recommended that all women of child-bearing age take a multivitamin containing 0.4 mg of Folic Acid per day to reduce the chance of neural tube defects in their children. A higher dosage of folic acid, usually 4 mg, may be recommended if you have elevated homocysteine levels before pregnancy.

i read that 1500 mcg/day l-methylfolate (5-mthf/levomefolic acid) can reduce depression. any brand you'd recommend? (i also take effexor/wellbutrin).

Accepted Answer

Pharmaceutical: L-methylfolate is an effective treatment of mood disorders if the patient cannot metabolize folic acid, a b vitamin, properly.  I suggest you find a pharmaceutical grade.  You may need to ask your doctor for a prescription.

Vitamins: We could say you just got VITAMIN-IZED!  Not a bad thing.  You are given folate, (folic acid) B12, &amp; B6 in what could essentially be considered a medical supplement or medical food.  It can be used for a variety of things but most often we see it used in cases of neuropathies caused by diabetes, etc. Side effects could be allergic, GI upset, diarrhea, skin reactions, or mostly nothing when taken as directed.

will a multivitamin containing 400 mcg of folic acid interfere with the efficacy of l-methylfolate as an ssri adjunct for a homozygous tt mthfr?

Accepted Answer

Not at all: The homozygous mthfr mutation limits your cells' ability to activate the dietary Folic Acid and the Folic Acid in the multivit.  The l-methylfolate is the active form of Folic Acid and can go right to work improving your neurotransmitter  synthesis.  But the mthfr mutations may also interfere with your complete utilization b12, ask you doctor if you need active b12, methylcobalamin, as well.

is there any risk to taking deplin supplement to homocystenene levels?

No: Over the counter Folic Acid will work just as well. It would be good to consult your doctor to find out the cause and treat any effects of elevated homocystene levels.
