i have swelling and bruising on my instep after a possible stress fracture on my 5th metatarsal; can these be connected? what is causing the swelling?

Yes: Stress fracture, just like any other fracture causes swelling and bruising.  The difference is that stress fracture results from over uses and pressure on the bone versus other fractures that are usually caused by trauma. Treatments of most of the foot fractures including stress fracture is immobilization along with compression, rest and elevation.

Nothing: The difference is in severity of pain. This is a more common cause of forefoot pain than morton's neuroma.

Heel pain: could be due to a calcaneal stress fracture, but there are other potential causes, so best to see your doctor.

Not : Uncommon to have bruising linger. Especially after sig trauma. As long as pain not worse should all be ok

Metatarsal is bone: Bone itself is not often referred to as tissue. A deep bruise of the bone is often related to bone marrow edema without any break in the cortex or outer shell of bone. A deep bruise of tissue is synonomous with a contusion.

I don't think so: stress and anxiety could lead to carelessness and accidents that might lead to bruising, but just anxiety will not lead to bruises. If you are having bruises and don't know why, speak to your physician to uncover the physiological causes.

1.5 weeks ago i got a non-displaced 5th metatarsal break. overall bruising has gone down but there's new bruising on my middle toes. is this normal?

Common: Yes as the blood travels through the tissue plains of the foot it will leave bruising distally in the toes.  As long as there was no further trauma or injury then this is completely normal and will take awhile to go away.  I hope this is useful.

If you scratched: them hard enough, you may have ruptured small blood vessels.

See a doctor: Pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty putting weight on the foot might indicate a foot fracture,  you want to see a podiatrist or orthopedist for evaluation, and foot x-rays can help answer your question.  While a simpler fracture might heal with immobilization and time, some require surgery to get the job done.  Good luck!

what should i do about potential metatarsal stress fracture?

See a podiatrist.: It could be a stress fracture of one of the central metatarsal bones, or just plantar forefoot pain from lack of enough cushioning of the foot.  For more cushioning, try spenco standard insoles.  If you want the insoles to have arch support as well, use the spenco polysorb cross trainer style.
