No: The cyst does not cause the period.  The hormones from the cysts on the ovaries do regulate the cycle - but they come and go.

Iron deficiency: It appears you have very low 'storage' iron -the ferritin. So if you supplement iron back, you should improve. Iron supplements are at CVS/drug stores.  You should also get iron from foods. Broccoli, spinach, raisins, prunes, DARK chocolate, red meats, and some cereals like raisin bran or cream of wheat are full of iron. I doubt you need a transfusion unless your Hemoglobin is dangerously low.

See your doctor: Menorrhagia can be caused by a number of issues.  Some of these issues can be dangerous.  Issues such as cervical cancer and endometrial cancer can present with heavy or irregular bleeding.  Often the cause is not cancer but may be other benign disease that needs to be addressed such as infections, fibroids, polyps, or ovarian dysfunction.

Varies with patient: Menorrhagia can have a number of causes.  The best therapy is directed at the underlying cause.  Fibroids, polyps, an ovulation, bleeding disorders and cancers can all cause heavy bleeding but would be treated very differently.  Seeing your physician can help determine the cause of menorrhagia/heavy bleeding and then outline a treatment plan.

Careful: If you are feeling well and your bleeding has stopped, then you could go.  However, you should take it easy and be careful.  You will need to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade.  If you are lightheaded, fatigued, or still bleeding, then you should stay home and recover.

Ovulation: If you are having irregular, heavy periods then you may not be ovulating. With our releasing an egg during ovulation then pregnancy can not occur.  Seek help for the menorrhagia and the doctor can test you for ovulation at that time.

Heavy periods: Menorrhagia simply means heavy periods.  Technically, it is defined as more than 80 ml or longer than 7 days, but it is usually used more as a qualitative term.
