Complex question: There are 3 types of MRI used to diagnose MS:  T1-weighted, T-2 weighted, and FLAIR.  No single test is used to diagnose MS, generally a combination of tests over time is needed to get a definitive diagnosis.  You need to consult a neurologist experienced with MS and let him or her guide you.  Do you have a family history of this disease? Although chronic, progression can be very slow. Good luck!

Consult Neurologist: Trgeminal neuralgia has been reported in patients with ms.You have to ask this question from your neyrologist as he/she is the only one can tell you if you do or not based on your symptoms, examination and MRI exam etc .
So consult your neurologist about ms and you.

Neurologist: I recommend consulting a neurologist for evaluation and testing. Loss of smell years ago may have been a marker for future brain pathology. Loss of cognitive functions and depression are concerning. Your symptoms aren't characteristic of MS. Get the appropriate help you need by starting with a visit to a neurologist.

can anything be done to alleviate the problems associated with intellectual disability - eg impaired memory, problem solving and thinking?

Educational &amp;: behavioral therapy is geared to the individual's age &amp; levels of cognitive &amp; adaptive functioning. Does he or she have SSI &amp; Medicaid + ADA accomodations for work, if an adult? People with mild-moderate ID can learn, with repetition.  Federal law grants a person with ID the right to services that promote integration into the community.If ID is severe-profound, to a competent caretaker.

Xyrem: This medication is used to treat cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy. Memory problems are not listed as a side effect according to my reading, but the prescribing physician and/or your pharmacist may have more information for you.

Apnea symptoms: Sleep apnea central or obstructive can cause the symptoms. The bigger issue is how the oxygen drops at night. The doctor should have that on the report. If this clears with CPAP bipap, then there should be considerable improvement. Given the  symptoms however i would also think that a general work up for causes of cognitive deficits would also be in order and your family doctor can take care of that. 20% of people with sleep apnea also have depression and if that is the case that should also be treated. Attention Problem: I doubt that you have any neurological disease with these symptoms.  But you very well may have an 'attention' problem

this can easily be diagnosed at a psychiatrist's office with the right testing for this problem.
