i went to the pool last month and the next day i started getting asthma attacks. it lasted about a week and a half. i know the chlorine triggered it . if i wanted to go to a pool with very little bromine, would that be safe for asthma??

: Chlorine is the primary agent used to keep pool water hygienic. The problem for asthma comes as the chlorine begins to form a gas when it leaves the pool surface through evaporation. It is worse on sunny days when the pool releases more, or if there is an excess in the water. Any such agent in gaseous form can trigger asthma. I know on no other agent used this way.

: Bromine like chlorine can produce coughing from its irritant quality. It is more stable but has a collection of skin irritant effects. True allergy is primarily based on exposure to organic (living/protein) compounds. Many chemical exposures can trigger allergy like events. One local pool with too much chlorine sent dozens of non-asthma patients to the ER with bronchospasm before it was closed.

when i was going to a regular pool with chlorine, i would get asthma attacks afterwards. i was told that bromine in pools might be better option for asthmatics, however i am still getting asthma attack. does bromine have some type of chlorine in it?

: The agents placed in pool water to keep germs away like chlorine or bromine will convert to a gas and evaporate from any pool over time. Sunlight/heat increases the speed of the conversion. Anyone with reactive lung disease/asthma can be triggered by the irritating actions of either gas. The two agents  share some similar properties but there is no chlorine in bromine.

Diet: There is no miracle in diet meds. All have side effects. Consult dr. Have cholesterol checked with focus on triglycerides as well as pre diabetes. Calories in calories out. Only structured life style over years can help. Consulting nutritionist after medical evaluation is wise decision consider understanding carbohydrates, fats, choose wisely. Colored berries as anti oxidants, etc.

Not aware of any: There are cough syrups that contain Codeine which is a narcotic.  At least historically there is a cough syrup that contained Dilaudid which is an even more powerful narcotic, but I am not sure if that is still available on the market.  I have never heard of any cough syrup that contains oxycodone.

OTC creams and spray: Products like americaine, anbesol, boil ease, cepacol sore throat, cetacaine, dermoplast, exactacain, hurricaine, lanacane, orabase with benzocaine, orajel, and skeeter stik all contain benzocaine.
