non-allergic motor-vaso rhinitis have been diagnosed with the above ailment, have been to 7 ent mds and 4 internists, have tried every medicine there is and nothing helps. runny nose, burning, teary eyes, can anybody help? please?

Chronic : Chronic nonallergic rhinitis is not a specific diagnosis, it is given when a person has sneezing, runny nose, congestion and drainage, but no allergic cause can be found.  We have four ways to determine allergy (blood and skin tests, direct challenge, or strong evidence from historical correlation).  In the us the first two are most commonly used, but in europe nasal challenge is sometimes used (spain has some of the world experts).  When skin and blood tests don't show an allergic cause but nasal allergen challenge does, we call this entopy (allergy isolated to that body area).   Nasal challenge studies have shown that some patients diagnosed with non-allergic rhinitis actually have challenge proven allergic triggers.  In the us, allergist can perform skin testing to common environmental triggers; such as tree, grass and weed pollens, molds, dust and mites, and animal danders.  Sometime a cause can be missed because only blood tests are used (and this testing method is not very good at diagnosing nasal allergy). There is also the possibility of not testing for the right things, mouse and rat for example can cause severe allergy but are not usually looked for unless we get the history that there is a rodent problem at home or work.  Similarly there can be allergy to cockroach or ladybug.  Foods can cause nasal and eye symptoms as well but will usually also cause mouth or digestive problems as well.  Food preservatives and dyes can also be hidden causes.  Medicines as well, such as hormonal replacements, blood pressure medicines, medicines for prostate problems, topical nasal decongestants, and pain medicines such as aspirin.  People with sensitivity to Aspirin and related NSAID medicines like Ibuprofen can have nasal and eye symptoms and are at potential risk for more severe life threatening reactions.  If a person is very sensitive they may even react to naturally occurring salicylates in food.  Rarely more severe diseases can have prominent nasal symptoms; diabetes, sarcoidosis, wegener's, polychondritis and uremia.  Infections; leishmaniasis, leprosy, tb, syphilis, sporotricosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, coccidiomycosis but a person would have other symptoms and usually be quite ill.  Ideally if a cause can be found and the trigger avoided then medicines can be avoided.  If no cause is found or it is unavoidable various treatments to try alone or in combination would include; nasal flushing with clean preferably boiled water, salt and baking soda, oral or topical antihistamines, ipratropium nasal spray , cromolyn nasal spray(over the counter), or nasal steroid sprays.  Leukotriene blocking medicines originally designed for asthma treatment are not steroids and are approved fro nasal symptoms, I have many patients that have responded well to singulair, (montelukast) Accolate (which has a generic) or zyflo (very costly). my ten month old has a fever of 100.8 what should i do i gave him medicine but its still not helping. he also has a runny nose and coughing?

: There is no reason to do anything. Fever at this level isn't harmful at all. Probably he just has a cold, but it could be COVID and he (and other family members) should be tested for it. Contact the child's pediatrician for advice. Good luck.

hi, im not sure what is wrong. when i swallow pills my chest kind of hurts like its getting stuck there and i have a cough and a runny nose. could i be getting g a cold or or could it be heartburn? is there otc from the store medicine i can take?

: Runny nose and cough are typical symptoms of a cold (viral upper respiratory infection). It should not cause heartburn.
Pain with swallowing pill is not normal but you did not specify what pill you were taking. OTC medication for heartburn is not helpful for pain when swallowing pill unless you have history of reflux esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus due to reflux GERD).

hey my wife is 19 and she has covid-19 with a fever thats been going on for 3 days. she also has a sore throat, runny nose, bad cough, and chills. she takes zoloft for her anxiety and she needs to know if she can take cold and flu otc medicine. ty?

: Treat symptoms, nasal saline may be helpful in relieving nasal congestion. Treat fever with Tylenol and monitor breathing. If there are signs of distress, please seek medical attention. The cough may linger, and if present at three weeks, discuss a ches image and evaluation with your physician. The OTC cough medications have potential side effects but may be used judiciously.

Depends on the cause: Clear discharge is a symptom that is common to allergy, irritation by very hot or cold air, viral infections, to name a few. Each condition responds differently to medication. If  your runny nose is seasonal, allergy is more likely. You may try an over the counter antihistamine such as cetirizine, fexofenadine or loratadine. If they don't help and your nose continues to run, see a physician.

Saline nasaal spray: Saline nasal spray or nasal rinses with a neti pot may help. If symptoms persist though you may need medicine.

Accepted Answer

It depends: If her nose has been running just for a few days, you may try nasal rinsing with saline. If she has had a runny nose for a long time and without fever, she may have allergies. Again, saline rinse would be helpful, but that you can try an otc antihistamine such as Cetirizine (zyrtec) syrup 1cc. If the runny nose continues, or requires daily medicine, see y our pediatrician or pediatric allergist.

Runny nose: You could have allergic rhinitis. And there are medications to treat it. Have your nose evaluated by a board certified otolaryngologist.

Nasal saline: Nasal saline and gentle suction may relieve post nasal drip. Cool mist humidification and providing fluids are helpful. There are children's cough syrups with honey which may provide relief for irritation of the throat. Monitor temperature and please follow up with your PCP.
